It is with sadness that the family of Hazel Evelyn (Flanagan) Thomas announces her death at home on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at the age of 94. Born in Dalhousie, NB, on January 25, 1928, Hazel was the wife of the late Edwin "Ned" A. Thomas, daughter of the late Edward and Bridgette (Rattie) Flanagan, and the youngest of 18 siblings. Hazel leaves behind her children Patty Thomas, Mark Thomas (Gina); special daughter-in-law Liliane Thomas (Leslie); special son-in-law Andrew Mott (Ginny); six granddaughters Sandi Braun (Jeff), Christina Martin (Zack), Jennifer Simms (Matt), Sarah Thomas (Donnie), Evelyn Mott (Dan), Serena Mott; and 8 great-grandchildren. Hazel is now reunited with her husband of seven decades, Ned; parents; sons John, George and Frederick; daughter Susan, and her numerous siblings. Hazel was a fighter from birth; born at four pounds in her family home and placed in the bread drawer of the wood stove. She loved fiercely, and her love was louder than words. Family was her first priority but she had a rewarding career as a nurse while raising her family. She was a true matriarch of the family, keeping everyone connected, safe and loved. She was protective of her loved ones and was fiercely passionate about every one of them. As her family grew, she looked forward to spending time travelling, on family vacations, and camping with her children and grandchildren. Hazel loved knitting in her spare time, and most family could count on a pair of mittens or sweater at Christmas, which was her favourite holiday. A memorial service and reception will be held in the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Thursday, June 16, 2022, at 1 pm, with Rev. Matt Maxwell officiating. Interment will take place at the Campbellton Rural Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hazel’s memory can be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Foundation for Prader-Willi Syndrome Research Canada.
