Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Szo
Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Merrill) Szo 1934 - 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty on March 28th, 2025. She is survived by her sons, Jeff (Kathy) and Rob (Christine); grandchildren, Tyler (Ashley), Jonathan (Robynn), Natalie (Jordan), Marianne, and Timothy, and great-grandchildren, Landen and Charley. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Bob, and daughter, Julie.
Betty was born on November 9, 1934, in Marysville, New Brunswick, the youngest child of Roy and Rose Merrill. She was the last surviving member of her family, which included George, Irene, Nate, Aileen, Roy, and Shirley. “Betty Ann” grew up loving school and having many friends. After graduation from FHS, she served in the Canadian Air Force, where she met her husband, Bob. They married in 1955 and eventually settled in Nashwaaksis. Her working life took her from the old Marysville Cotton Mill to the office of the Premier in Fredericton, Seneca College in Toronto, and finally back to Fredericton and the provincial government. Her work was characterised by excellence as an administrative and executive assistant.
She discovered her main hobby later in life, when she joined the Elm City Echoes. Those years of singing and friendship were precious to her.
Betty will be remembered as a woman who loved her family and was happiest when she was either raising her children or had her grandchildren around. She was outgoing and seemed to know just about everyone in town.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, from 6:00 - 8:00pm at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street in Fredericton. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday May 24th at 10:00am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1500 Hanwell Road, with Father Bill Brennan officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will be at Alexander Gibson Memorial Cemetery, Marysville. Thank you to the staff, nurses, and doctors at Thomas Hall, and to the staff of McAdam’s Funeral Home. Donations in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of New Brunswick would be appreciated.
