Obituary of John Frederick Horsnell
The family is heartbroken to announce the passing of John Frederick Horsnell on May 8th, 2025, at Shannex Neill Hall, Fredericton, NB. John was born in Fredericton, on May 30th, 1934 to the late Alfred and Alice (Cordery) Horsnell.
John is survived by his children, Michael (Mary Lou) Horsnell; daughter, Sandra Matthews; daughter-in-law, Susan Horsnell; grandchildren, Jennifer (David), Jason (Rebecca), Christopher, Alex and Heather; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Kayleigh, Alyssa, Ben, Jackson, Austin, Asher and Ember; his sister, Gwen McMullin; brother-in-law, Bill Kimmo, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife, Ann; son, Derek; son-in-law, James Matthews; brother, Alfred (Sonnie) Horsnell; and sisters, Doreen Blair, Marjorie Whitcomb, Phyllis Horsnell, and Lillian Kimmo.
John started his career working at his family’s businesses. Firstly, at Horsnell Machine and Iron Works, then at Brunswick Oxygen. He purchased City Springs Service from his father in 1965. John ran his business until 1998, along side his wife Ann who ran the businesses’ office. When he decided to retire in 1998, his son Derek took over the business.
John and Ann travelled extensively throughout Canada and the United States, as well as taking trips abroad. Winters were often enjoyed in Florida and summers were spent in his home at Lake George (his happy place).
John was a well known and proud member of the Fredericton City Club. He was famous for his lobster cooking skills and in addition to cooking for the city club was often asked to cook for other organizations. He was a member of the Elks Club, UCT and the Lake George Snowmobile Club, as well as an honorary member of the Road Builders Association.
John loved to tinker and was often fixing things or building things. Countless trailers were built by John at both City Springs and at Lake George.
The family wishes to thank Oromocto Public Hospital as well as Neill Hall for their kindness to John. A special thanks to Billy and Melissa Fitzgerald, as well as Dale Astles and Lynne Horsnell for all the help they extended to John and Ann.
The family will receive the public at a visitation at McAdams Funeral home on Wednesday May 14th from 2-4 and 6-8. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Parish Church on Thursday, May 15th, at 1pm with a reception to follow. Interment will take place at Fredricton Rural Cemetery after the service.
