Obituary of Phyllis Marguerite Betts

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Phyllis Marguerite Betts announces her passing on May 26, 2025 at Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital.  After an incredible life that spanned over 94 years, Phyllis slipped away peacefully, having had the opportunity for a final visit with her son and his family.

Born on October 21, 1930, in Doaktown, NB; she was the daughter of Perley and Edna (Gilks) Betts. Phyllis became a nurse, serving with the Royal Canadian Army, where she became a Major and retired after 30 years of service.  Through her military service, she was able to travel, which suited her adventurous and independent spirit, as well as practice and develop her nursing and administrative skills.

For at least twenty years, Phyllis provided foster care to dozens of children and became one of the first single women in New Brunswick to adopt. She invested herself in caring for her foster children and her son, Dalen, and took great pride in their growth and accomplishments. Family was very important to Phyllis. She also loved animals, especially her dog and faithful companion for many years, Hector.

She is survived by her son, Dalen (Abbie) Betts; her beloved grandchildren, Asher and Harlow; her sister, Betty Richardson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and foster children who benefited from her care.  Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters - Juanita Jonah, Ina Pynch, Joyce Davis and Georgina Young - and her brother, Tunney Betts.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 2 pm, at Grace Memorial Baptist Church in Fredericton, NB. Rev. Dr. Scott Dunham will officiate.  Interment will take place at Doaktown United Baptist Cemetery in Doaktown, NB the following day.  For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to S.P.C.A. Fredericton or the Boys and Girls Club.
