Obituary of Lea Doris Gautreau
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Lea Doris Gautreau on June 19, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Minto, New Brunswick, on May 24, 1950, she was the youngest daughter of the late Emile and Emelia Legere. As in life, in the days prior to her death, she was surrounded by her loving family. We poured ourselves into her care over the last year because, thanks to her, we have never known any other way but to express love deeply and overflowing with loyalty.
Lea was a woman of deep faith, and that faith brought her a sense of true peace that readied her for the next journey in life. She was naturally very private, but for a core group of friends who knew her well she opened her true self. She was known to make her way into the spotlight at family functions, keeping people laughing with her quick wit, and entertained with karaoke.
She retired from the Government of New Brunswick after 39 years in public service, and promptly careened herself into the most fulfilling role of her life, that of a loving grandmother. More than anything, her family was her pride. It was in the way she took care of us, and the sacrifices she made without ever calling them that. She gave of herself fully and quietly. Even when we didn’t realize it at the time, she was building something lasting: a sense of home, of strength, of love.
Lea is survived by her two children, Melanie (Chris Miles), and Daniel (Siobhan MacDonald); cherished granddaughters, of whom she thought the world, Gillian, and Ellie Miles; siblings, Laurie Legere (Mary Ann), Yvonne Legere, and Stella Legere; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, of 40 years, Bob Gautreau, in 2014.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on June 23, 2025, at 11 am with Fr. John Jennings officiating. For those who wish, donations in memory of Lea may be made to Hospice House.
