Obituary of Florence Theresa MacDonald

Florence Theresa MacDonald

30 December 1926 – 10 August 2025

With sadness, we the family announce the death of our mother, Florence Theresa MacDonald (née MacInnis) on 10 August, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Florence was the eldest daughter of the late Archie and Effie Margaret (Campbell) MacInnis and the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Florence grew up in the shipyard area of Sydney, Cape Breton. After her marriage in 1956, she resided in Sydney Forks for 55 years and in 2011 relocated to Fredericton. We are forever grateful for the love, attention, and support Denise, Tim, Robert, and Michael provided while she lived in Fredericton.

Florence was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and was a Catholic Women’s League member for over 50 years.

Florence had many interests including baking, Cape Breton fiddle music, and in her later years, she embraced technology and was an avid player of Wordle on her iPad, often getting the answer quicker than her much younger competition.

She is survived by her sons: Doug (Anne) of Mississauga and John (Monica) of Etobicoke; and her daughters, Margaret (Gordon MacDonald) of Tantallon, Denise (Dr. Tim Haswell) of Fredericton, and Jane (Patrick Lacey) of Newcastle ON; as well as her five grandchildren, James (Amanda) and Hannah (Sara) MacDonald, Robert and Michael Haswell, and Avery MacDonald, whom she loved dearly and often baked her special oatcakes for.

She is further survived by her sisters in law, Mary Hopkins and Kaye Graham, and many nieces and nephews who she happily corresponded with online.

She was predeceased by her husband James A., brother John, sisters Maria Morrison, Margaret Townsend, and Mary Catherine (in infancy), as well as several brothers and sisters in law.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jillian Higgs and Dr. Kelsey Cameron. We are also appreciative of the care provided by Extra-Mural nursing staff and the spiritual care provided by Father Bill Brennan.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, 14 August at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in East Bay, Nova Scotia; followed by burial at the Parish cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the St. Mary’s cemetery fund.

Rest in peace Mom, may your memory bless us now and always.
