I first met Iris while she was chasing me through her backyard with a broom. We had the best little neighborhood in Dollard des Ormeaux and it just so happened that her yard was the perfect shortcut to get to those places that little kids need to get to. First, it was terrifying, but soon my little gang took on the challenge of tormenting this poor woman with her broom.
Imagine my horror when, one day, I walked into my house and came face-to-face with the crazy broom lady!!?? As “luck” would have it, Iris and my mother (Janet) met each other while working at Riverdale High School’s library.
Mom and Iris spent the better part of a decade as inseparable friends. It turned out she wasn’t as crazy as my five year old self thought. I remember much wine, eggnog, rum and family meals being shared as two of the most opinionated women I have encountered, solved the world’s problems.
Iris was gruff, but behind that facade was an amazing woman who was always willing to tell it like it was and provide great advice.
The world is a lesser place with her absence…
