Obituary of Anne Margaret Johnson

It is with sadness that the family of Anne Margaret Johnson announces her passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton on Wednesday, October 8th, 2025, in her 78th year. Born in Kingston, ON, on October 25th, 1947, she was the wife of Doug Johnson of New Maryland.

In addition to her husband, Doug, Anne leaves behind her children, Rhonda Kapuschat (Rob) and Steven Johnson (Tanya); grandsons, RJ Kapuschat and Ryan Johnson; brothers, John, Brian (Judy) and Wayne Hanlon (Ingrid); brother-in-law, Jamie Hodgson; chosen daughter, Tracey Mockler; close cousins, Glenis and Norman Johnson; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Anne was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Margaret (Smith) Hanlon, and her sister-in-law, Lynn Hodgson.

In school, Anne excelled in math and sports. She broke through the glass ceiling in high school when she was selected to be the first girl on the varsity boy’s basketball team. She was that good. Always a liberal, she first worked for Flora McDonald, Hugh Segal and Dalton Camp, at Queen's University Political Science, in the “Blue Sanctuary”. She later moved to Fredericton, where her life as a single mom started, as she took a position with UNB Civil Engineering Department. Anne would go on to work at the UNB Dean of Students Office, the MRI Research Center and the Vice President Research Office. In 1974 she took a job working for Dr. Frank Wilson in the new Transportation Group Graduate Program, which is where she met Doug.

They started their life’s journey together, which went on for 50 years. She and Doug enjoyed travelling, fine dining, and live entertainment. Anne enjoyed spending summers for years outside St. Andrews with Doug and many winters with him in Florida. Many friendships were made. She loved to entertain, making fantastic multi-course meals. Her children were her greatest joy and she would do anything for them. She will be missed by many, but most of all by Doug.

Anne enjoyed volunteering as a fitness instructor for the Y in New Maryland. She was a member of the UCW and taught Sunday School, Brownies, was a Red Hatter (a Queen), and co-managed the Bantam AAA hockey team. She also took ballroom dance classes, taught line dancing, tole painted, and made beautiful greeting cards.

A Celebration of Anne’s Life will be held on her birthday, Saturday, October 25th, 2025, at 2:00 pm from the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel. Her fur companion, Skye, will be present. Rev. Dr. Kelly Burke and Rev. Dr. Brad Little will officiate. A live stream of the service is available to watch at the following link: https://vimeo.com/event/5439907. Anne loved flowers so flowers would be welcome at the celebration of Anne’s life.  For those who wish, donations in Anne’s memory can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
