Obituary of Michael Bruce Currie

It is with deep sadness that the family of Michael Bruce Currie announces his passing on November 1, 2025, at the age of 86.

Michael was born in Fredericton to parents Bruce Smith Currie and Charlotte Mae (Howland) Currie. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Janet (Kitchen) and brothers Peter (Sandra) and David (Diane), his daughter Debra (Paul), son John (Manuela) and sister-in-law Joan (Jim). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Megan, Malcolm, Charles, Olivia and Matteo. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Patson Gale Currie.

Born and raised in Fredericton, Michael graduated from Fredericton High School in 1957 and attended Teachers College for one year before enrolling at the University of New Brunswick, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry in 1968. During his university years, he played one season of UNB varsity hockey and spent the summer of 1965 playing semi-professional baseball in Rimouski, where he earned the nickname “Pizza Currie.”

Michael’s career reflected his strong work ethic and love of the outdoors. He taught school in Nackawic (1968-1970) and Oromocto (1970-1972) before joining the New Brunswick Power Commission where he worked from 1973-1983. He later spent 15 years surveying with Gordie Young at Woodlot Services Ltd. Even after retirement, he enjoyed part-time work at Mactaquac Golf Course, where he valued the friendship and conversation as much as the fresh air.

Outside of work, Michael had a lifelong appreciation for nature and simple pleasures. He loved fly-fishing—tying his own flies with care and precision—as well as hunting, skating, walking and reading. He loved all sports, in particular baseball, hockey and golf. He was an avid supporter of the Boston Bruins as well as the Baltimore Orioles. He was a lifelong fan of the UNB Reds hockey team, cheering on the team for many years. He had many lifelong friends (playing old-timer hockey with many of them) including Wayne, Carl, Les, Doodie and Wayman. Mike had a soft spot for all animals, in particular the many cats that he and Janet loved over the years and his special dog, Jake the Labrador, who enjoyed his fishing excursions on the Saint John River.

The family extends their gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Neill Hall as well as the many doctors and nurses who helped care for Michael during his time at the Chalmers Hospital.

There will be no visitation by request. A private graveside service will take place with a Celebration of Life to follow at a later date. For those who wish, donations in Michael's memory may be made to the SPCA or a charity of the donor's choice.
