Obituary of Margery (Squires) Acheson
Margery (Squires) Acheson, age 88, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025, in hospital, surrounded by family.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Thomas William "Bill" Acheson; her children Robert Acheson (Lynn), Susan Acheson (Howard Myatt), and John Acheson; her grandchildren Thomas Myatt, Sarah Myatt (Adam Bishop), Megan Acheson, and Erin Acheson; and her great-granddaughter Carmen Bishop. Margery is also survived by her siblings Bill Squires (Nancy), Susanne Lawrence, and Bob Squires.
She was predeceased by her parents, Helen and Dr. W. Austin Squires, and by her brother-in-law Eric Lawrence and sister-in-law Jean Squires.
Margery was an exceptional and highly acclaimed local artist, particularly renowned for her portraits. Through facial expression and body language, she captured the quiet stories found in seemingly ordinary or everyday moments. Her artwork also frequently featured birds, historical buildings, and people in meaningful settings.
An accomplished athlete, Margery achieved remarkable success in track and field at a young age. Before the age of 17, she earned national gold medals in the Broad Jump and the 100-yard dash, and went on to win a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games as part of the 4x100-yard relay team. In recognition of her national and international achievements, she was proudly inducted into the Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all of Margery’s doctors for their care and dedication, with special thanks to Dr. Sean Dolan, whose compassion and commitment played a significant role in her courageous battle with cancer.
Margery was a devoted and active member of Wilmot United Church, with a family connection to the congregation spanning nearly two centuries. Her great-grandmother was among the women known as “The Sisterhood,” whose dedication and leadership led to the creation of the original Methodist church in Fredericton, now known as Wilmot United Church.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at Wilmot United Church on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception. Reverend Ellen Beairsto will officiate. Margery will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed.
