Obituary of Mark Herbert Hymers
It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Mark Herbert Hymers, following a brief illness and hospitalization on January 25, 2026, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born on November 18, 1948, in Kitchener, ON, he was the son of the late Lorne James and Kathleen Muriel (Leahy) Hymers, and beloved husband to Heather (Eastwood) Hymers.
Mark was a real train enthusiast, a love he inherited from his own father and sought to pass onto his wife and children with multiple trips to various train yards over the years (there was always ice-cream on offer). Mark was a committed civil engineer and served the city of Fredericton with pride in the latter half of his career. Mark’s compassion for others and skills as an engineer saw him travel twice to Sri Lanka to assist with humanitarian aid efforts after the tsunami in 2004, setting the ultimate example of love in action that defined him. Mark also had a deep love for learning and the arts and could often be found at various lectures and performances throughout the city. His joy of music and love for God brought him to his place of safety – Christ Church Parish Church. He lent his deep bass voice to their choir for over a decade and found complete harmony with the community there that became his second family.
Mark will be greatly missed by all his girls; loving wife, Heather; cherished daughters, Sharlene Doherty (Rob), Mary Hymers, Colleen Hymers (Craig), and Heather Ruth Kennedy (Blake); grandchildren, Caitlyn, Thomas, Nate, Nicholas, Samantha, and Charlotte; sisters, Rosemary Sookman (Bernie), and Anita Turner (late John), as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Mark was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence Hymers, who he missed greatly every day.
The family would like to acknowledge the hard work, attention and dedication of the staff on 4NW and 3NE; they treated our dad with such love and compassion for which we will forever be grateful.
By Mark’s request, cremation has taken place. A celebration will be held at the Christ Church Parish Church in the early spring for all those who wish to remember and celebrate such an extraordinary life.
For those who wish, memorial donations may be made in Mark’s honour to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or charity of your choice.
