Obituary of Merna Marie (LaKing) Harper
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Merna Marie (LaKing) Harper on March 23, 2026 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital (DECH). Born on February 27, 1942 in McAdam, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Maynard and Marion (McGee) LaKing.
Merna graduated from McAdam Composite High School in 1960. She began her working career in Moncton with T. Eaton Co. and went on to work at the Royal Bank of Canada for more than 20 years in both the Regina and Calgary branches.
Merna loved line dancing over the years under the direction of her longtime friend, Eric Hart. She enjoyed being with her friends at various activities at Shannex where she lived for the last few years. Merna looked forward to every September when she would travel with her dear friend from Regina, Karen Bily.
Merna is survived by her son, Kevin Donahue (Donalda) of Aulac, NB; brother, Doug LaKing of Fredericton, NB; granddaughter, Kayla Donahue of Moncton, NB; as well as many dear friends and extended family.
In addition to her parents, Merna was predeceased by her husband, Garth Harper; brothers, Danny and Carl, as well as many aunts and uncles.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Raza and Dr. Swan in the Oncology unit at the DECH. We would also like to thank the Extra Mural nurses for their countless trips to Merna’s residence. As well, we would like to recognize the excellent palliative care given to Merna by the nurses, doctors and staff in 4 South East at the DECH.
In keeping with Merna’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. The family would appreciate memorial donations in Merna’s name to be made to the SPCA or a charity of your choosing.
