On March 20, 2026, I had the privilege of hearing Mary’s voice. It was a mild winter afternoon, and Jamie was giving me a ride to a men’s retreat. Mary called Jamie, and he promptly answered. After greeting his mom, Jamie said, “I am with a couple of gentlemen as we are getting ready to go on a men’s retreat.” Mary replied, “I just wanted to say hi and to bless you as you go on in your journey.” In her voice, I could hear the love she had for Jamie. It was truly a blessing to hear from Mary, and it was comforting to know that wherever Jamie goes, Mary will always be by his side.

The Asian Heritage Society of New Brunswick extends its sincere condolences to the family of Mary Ryan on her passing. One often-shared story reflects her heart: as a teacher, she was deeply troubled by a moment of prejudice among her young students and resolved that something had to be done. And she did—through a lifetime of compassion, action, and dedication to others.
Mary’s legacy of faith in action will continue to inspire us all.

I only got to know Mary after she was admitted to Shannex Nursing home and she was writing a book. She read my newspaper commentaries so we found that we had a lot to talk about. I enjoyed many phone calls and a few in-person visits which were pleasant an in which we had animated discussion of senior care. I will miss her friendship.

Dear Mr. Ryan and Jamie,
I was very sorry to learn of Mary’s passing. I first met Mary when she was my teacher at St. Dunstan’s School, and she made a lasting impression on me. She was incredibly kind, patient, and encouraging, and my family and I were fortunate to have stayed in touch with her over the years at St. Dunstan’s Church.
Mary had a remarkable way of making people feel seen and valued, and her influence reached far beyond the classroom. I will always be grateful for the care and guidance she gave so generously, for including me in her Junior Ambassador initiative through the Multicultural Association, and for the opportunity to reconnect with her a few years ago at her book launch at Shannex.
Please know that you are in my thoughts during this difficult time. I hope you can find comfort in the many lives Mary touched and the deep admiration so many people held for her.
With deepest sympathy - Natasha Woods

Dear Ryan family,
I met Mary when I was a reporter for CBC in Fredericton. She was the kind of person who left you feeling like you could ‘do anything’… and SHOULD. A kind soul, a quick mind, and a very determined attitude.
What was she like? You know…just like the dandelion pushing up out of the asphalt.
I have no doubt she is now encircled in unfathomable, divine love. May you feel the joy of her resurrection as you experience the grief of her loss.
With love and respect to all who loved her,
Catherine Harrop

I was saddened to hear of Mary’s passing. When I was going to say Dunston‘s and when I was Catholic, she served as my sponsor or godmother for many years. She was a wonderful, encouraging influence in my life, and I will always cherish my fondness for her. My prayer is for the family who survived her for her husband, Jim, son, Jamie, and all their families that God in his infinite love and mercy or surround them, console them and strengthen them in this terribly difficult time while those of us who do know the Lord as saviour and Lord have a heavenly home to look forward to, as human beings we miss those who go before us so you all are in my prayers.
Mary Oliver Ryan Requiescat in Pace.
Rest in Peace!
