Obituary of George Leslie Colter

George Leslie Colter, born October 4, 1946 to Burton and Patricia (Carr) Colter, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

After earning his engineering degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1972, he went on to serve as President of Diamond Construction, working alongside his father and continuing the family legacy with pride. Upon the wind-up of Diamond Construction in 2002, George was instrumental in the start-up of Springhill Construction Ltd, continuing an important part of the family business.

George had a lifelong passion for fishing and card playing. From a young age he found joy on the water, and he was happiest sharing these passions with others, always eager to bring someone along for a day on the river. His love for Atlantic salmon and trout fishing knew no bounds, extending to his involvement in the Miramichi Salmon Association. Spending time at “Loggie Pool” camp on the Miramichi River, built by his grandfather, Ashley Colter, was one of his favourite traditions and among the proudest legacies for his family to enjoy together. Watching his children and grandchildren develop a love for fishing brought him immense pride and happiness. He also created lasting memories at Little Sisters Lake, which he leased for the exclusive enjoyment of his family and friends. It was one of his favourite places, and the time spent there will be cherished forever by all who were lucky enough to share it with him. In true George fashion, he, with the help of his brother Lee and family, had recently had a custom pontoon boat built. That way he and his fishing buddies could fish in comfort without the worry of tipping the boat or falling out, something that had likely happened more than any of them would care to admit. In his later years he especially loved playing bridge, German poker, and 45’s. He supported the game he loved by serving as a director and contributing to tournament and club management committees. He enjoyed many successes at both tournaments and in club play, but what mattered most was the example he set; he was a fine player and an even finer sport.

George also had a deep love for travel and discovering new places. He cherished the European vacation he took with his wife, Helen, and a memorable trip to Italy with his son Joey and close friends. He often spoke of his dream to one day return to Tuscany with all of his children. He loved the countless family road trips over the years to Florida, and many cherished weekends skiing at his property in Sugarloaf, Maine, USA. For the past 25 years, George spent half the year in Florida, which became his second home. There, he formed many meaningful friendships and became a familiar and cherished presence in the local bridge club and community. He played with some of the most renowned bridge players in the world and loved traveling to compete in ACBL National bridge tournaments. George loved to read and almost always had a book in hand. He had a deep appreciation for music and loved to dance. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his family—singing, laughing, and dancing together.

Above all, George was an incredibly supportive and devoted father. He took great pride in his children and was always there to encourage and support their business ventures and pursuits. His belief in them never wavered. He was a gentleman always - kind, funny, charming, with a warm smile. He had a way about him that made those around him want to be better, to do better. George will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. His presence will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his loving children, Geoff Colter (Rachelle), Jonas Colter (Jessica), Jamie Colter (Neely), Joey Colter (Robyn), David “Beau” Colter, and Victoria Colter (Nolan). He was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, each of whom brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his siblings, Claudia (late Derek), and Lee Colter (Wendy), as well as his sister-in-law, Elaine (late David, George’s brother).

George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen, in August 2025 after more than 45 years of marriage. Their love was deep and enduring, and he missed her dearly.

In keeping with Dad’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association of Canada.
