Obituary of James David Innes

James David Innes passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.  David was born May 16, 1946, in Newcastle, New Brunswick, to Jim and Letty (Griffin) Innes.

He is survived by his devoted wife and partner of 63 years, Thelma (Russell) Innes and their seven children; Jennifer (John), Jamie (Katy), Erin, Pauline (Jason), Natalie, David, and Emily. He was a proud and loving grandfather to ten grandchildren: Alex, Ben, Cameron, Dylan, Sean, Weston, Annie, Max, Grace, and Daniel. He is also survived by his siblings; Mary (Dennis), Roy (Dorothy), Cecilia (Doug), and Claude; and many nieces and nephews.

David grew up in Newcastle, where he was an active member of the Boy Scouts and developed a lifelong love of salmon fishing. He went on to pursue his calling as an engineer, with a particular passion for transportation. He shared that passion, first through roles with the New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Transport Canada, and then as a civil engineering professor at the University of New Brunswick for 25 years, also serving as President of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE).  His professional contributions were recognized through fellowships from the CSCE and the Engineering Institute of Canada.

A dedicated and respected leader, David contributed to his community throughout his life. He served as Chairman of the Fredericton Airport Authority and went on to become the first President and CEO of the Fredericton International Airport. His commitment to community service was recognized by the Rotary Foundation when he was named a Paul Harris Fellow.

A man of deep and enduring faith, David lived with conviction and integrity which shaped his life and the lives of those around him. He took immense pride in his family, cherishing his role as husband, father, and grandfather above all else.

David found joy in many pursuits. He was an avid golfer and fisherman who spent many years travelling the world with Thelma. In quieter moments, he enjoyed music and spent many hours in later life watching his favourite performances.

David was deeply loved and widely respected. His family and friends take comfort in the faith he shared and the legacy of love, strength, and kindness he leaves behind.

Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home (160 York St) on Sunday, April 19th, 2026 from 1-3pm and 6-8pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Church (1500 Hanwell Road) on Monday, April 20th, 2026 at noon.

His family would like to thank the medical teams at both the Saint John Regional Hospital and the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital for their care and compassion.
