Allen, Janet, Jillian, & Family,
I think of Anne as a force of nature. She was the most creative & talented person that I knew. I was saddened to read about her death.
I met Anne when I first moved to Fredericton and got a part-time teaching job, teaching English to French Immersion at Liverpool St. School in the fall of 1979. At that time, I was especially impressed by the high level of performance Anne's gymnastic girls' club at the school, achieved. I was motivated to start my own little group of younger girls. Michael Jackson's music was popular at the time and I used "She's a Maneater" for their performance, which brought a laugh to your mom & parents, alike. I couldn't hold a candle to Anne's ability but I was young & made an effort.
While I was at Liverpool, there were two memorable parties that your mom hosted. One was a Christmas party at your cozy & impressively decorated house on Deerwood Dr. However, the more memorable one was the year end party at Yo Ho Lake; it was so relaxing & so much fun. Someone got thrown into the lake; I think it was Brian Cornell, vice principal at the time. At one point, we were all on our backs on the floor of the cottage, with Anne leading exercises to music. I'm sure there's a photo of that somewhere; it was long before cell phones. Oh, to be young!
Janet & Jillian, I haven't seen your mom in a few years. I would bump into her every now & again & we would have a short chat. I got a full time teaching job at another school in the summer of 1984 so there were no formal good-byes. However, your mom took it upon herself to give me a gift of two china roses, which I still have. How thoughtful! When I look at them, I will think of her.
My sincere condolences,
Linda Hubbard

Mr. Mitton, Jillian, Janet, and families,
I am so deeply sorry to hear of Mrs. Mitton’s passing. Bruce and I send our heartfelt sympathies to all of you.
I was thinking of her recently while reminiscing about the teachers who made the greatest impact on my life, and she has always been at the very top of that list. She wasn’t just a wonderful teacher — she shaped lives. She encouraged, challenged, and believed in me, and in so many students at South Devon Elementary, long before we knew how to believe in ourselves.
Growing up as friends with Jillian and Janet, I was lucky to know her outside the classroom as well. I have so many fond memories of her warmth, her kindness, and the way she always made me feel welcome — like I was part of your family.
She will be deeply missed, and always remembered with love and gratitude.
Hugs to you all.
Kathy (McCabe) Stapleton

Janet, Jillian and family,
My sincere sympathies on the loss of your Mom. I recall my visits to your house way back in junior high, how warm and kind your mom was and being impressed by her authored works at the time as I was an avid reader. Thinking of you during this difficult time.

To the family and friends of Anne Mitton, I express my condolences. My special memory of Anne was when she and her husband Allan invited me into their home with my Easley family on a Christmas Boxing Day many years ago where we enjoyed delicious food and watched a movie together. Anne was a gracious hostess taking care of everyone. I will remember her kindness to me and her warm smile. Cheryl Cougle

My life is so much the richer for crossing paths with Anne. In 2013 I was working at The Charlotte Street Arts Centre and looking for a writer to work with me on a project - Julie Easley connected me with Anne Mitton and the rest is history. Years of working together on projects big and small, tea and muffins at her spotless dining room table, laughter, re-writes and daffodils traded back and forth built a deep bond. I will miss Anne dearly, but have so much of her in my heart that I will continue to share with others. Her unwavering belief in the talent of others. Her bountiful generosity. Her passion in the written word. Thank you Anne. You were a true friend.

I met Anne in September of 2016 when I reluctantly attended a writing class she had volunteered to hold every month in our apartment building. I planned to stay for the first class and make my exit during the break. I stayed that day and was her eager student until this spring; however, what she taught me and all her students, will be with us always.
Anne was a remarkable woman, teacher, and a dear friend. She had exceptional patience, an amazing wit, and a good heart. Everyone who was graced with the gift of her teaching would agree that her input and insight greatly improved our work.
She was generous with her time and the ever-present decadent chocolates in a bowl on her dining room table; the table where our group would meet for what she called “our sessions”.
Over the years, she and I had many conversations outside of the classroom, usually on the phone but at times we would meet for a late brunch. She is the only person I’ve met who would order a pot of hot water rather than tea and her obvious pleasure made you think it was the nectar of the gods.
The topics of our conversations varied; we would touch on writing of course but most often we would stray to politics as well as other topics and she always asked me “how is everything?” At times, Anne knew me better than I knew myself. She was an exceptional listener and advisor who helped me tremendously in dealing with the process of losing my dear friend Nancy.
Anne, an integral part of my life, is difficult to let go. She was a woman who lived her life gently and many are sharing the loss of her.

Allan, Janet and Jillian… We just heard about your loss. The world is a sadder place without Anne. From the moment I met her, Anne was teacher, mentor and friend. She had a way of drawing the best out of those who were blessed to be in her orbit. Although physical distance prevented us from spending a lot of time together, our connection remained strong and I will miss her warmth and wisdom.
