I was truly saddened to learn of Michael’s passing. We had gone many years without connecting but I always enjoyed his social media posts of his adventures. They were inspiring and amazing to see. Last fall we chatted at a football game at UNB and it was so great to connect if only for that short time. My thoughts and sincerest condolences to Michael’s family and close friends. He was a bright light.

I first became friends with Mike because of Speedy thank you Speedy. Before that, he was just “the kid who always wore hospital scrubs” in my mind. I swear he wore hospital scrubs for two years straight it seemed, and so for many of us, he was “the doctor”.
When I called him up to say I was going to Europe and asked him if he wanted to go hiis answer was, are you serious, sure when? I said as soon as possible, I gotta get out of here. His response was, might take me a couple of weeks to get a passport. A few weeks later, we were on our way to Europe. In Europe, I watched Mike evolved into the barefoot wanderer before my eyes…
Our friendship it turned out was lifelong. The doctor is my only friend from Fredericton to visit me in every town I’ve lived in since my return to Canada. So many stories so many memories. Some of the things I will remember most about Mike are…
His ability to accept everyone as they are without judgment. His laughter and his ability to make others laugh. His snoring like a sawmill. His vitality, positive energy and Joy. The tracker. Living together on Dundonald Street. Mythology classes. Mike dressing up as Dr. Nick for Halloween. Foosball in the sub. Backyard fires at a squat house we lived in in Holland. Skiing together in the Alps. Driving a bike without tires in Holland sparks flying everywhere. Brewing, delivering (and drinking) beer for a microbrewery in France. Skiing together in Whistler. Listening to all the ways he was written up for being inappropriate and how he became “inappropriate Mike” in Whistler. Watching him explain how he destroyed my mountain bike in SunPeaks one summer. Finishing the keg from my wife’s 40th birthday with you in Revelstoke. Watching my kids wake you up on my couch the next morning. Catching up last summer in NB.
To Mike’s mum, brother, girlfriend and his entire family, I am sooo so very sorry for your loss. I personally feel very lucky to have known him. We had so much fun together over the years. I am a better person because I knew him…
Doc. Whatever adventure Im sure you are on now, I will catch up with you again at some point, we always do. In the meantime, I know you are doing something exciting and everyone around you is laughing. You will be missed back here. I am honoured to call you my friend.
Love to all,
Steve Moore

My condolences to the Holland family. I worked with Mike in Whistler Blackcomb Events back in Winter 2015 & 2016. He helped me on my career path within the world of snowboarding & thought me so much while making me laugh along the way. He was so passionate about diving & I loved hearing about the adventures he would go on in the summers. Rest easy Mike, you we're a one of a kind adventurer.

I didn't have many moments with Michael but one will stay with me forever. I was trying to open the door to get my bike out and I could not figure out what key opened it. I was frustrated and internally starting the spiral. Michael was outside and he asked if I wanted him to open it. I said "no" because I was stubborn and didn't want to admit I had no idea what key I needed. He came up and said, "well what if you just look at my key and see which one of yours matches." There was so much kindness and empathy in that one little moment and I appreciated it so much. Every time I open that door I think of Michael and how one simple act can have everlasting impact on someone who needed help but couldn't bring themselves to ask. I know his memory will be a blessing to all that knew and loved him.
