Obituary of David Leonard Coulson, CD1

Sergeant (Retired) – Canadian Armed Forces

It is with deep sadness, but with profound gratitude for a life well-lived, that the family announces the passing of David Leonard Coulson in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. Born in Barrie, Ontario, he was the son of the late Ernest and Cecelia Coulson.

David’s distinguished 28-year military career began with a year in the Militia, followed by his enlistment in the Canadian Regular Army. Starting his career at CFB Borden, he was soon posted to the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise’s) in CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick—a province that would eventually become his home. A dedicated soldier, David rose to the rank of Sergeant and served Canada with pride both at home and abroad. His extensive career postings and deployments took him across the globe, including tours in Soest and Hemer, Germany; CFB Petawawa, Ontario; two deployments to Egypt (including serving during the conflict in 1973); Cyprus; and the Golan Heights.

For his dedicated service, Sergeant Coulson was awarded the Canadian Forces' Decoration with one bar (CD1) representing his 28 years of loyal service, the Special Service Medal (NATO), and campaign medals recognizing his operational deployments to Egypt, Cyprus, and the Golan Heights. Following his retirement from the Regular Force at CFB Gagetown, David remained deeply connected to his military roots as a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Known to all as a gentle soul with a wonderful sense of humour, David made lifelong friends wherever his postings took him. In his well-deserved retirement, he turned his skilled hands to carpentry, a passion that brought him great joy.

David leaves behind his loving spouse, Marion Coulson. He was a proud father to Debbie Coulson and Dale Coulson, and a caring stepfather to Michael Butcher and Stephen Butcher. He was the cherished grandfather of Dana, Lucas, Chris, Alex, and Erin, and a proud great-grandfather to six great-grandchildren. David is also survived by his two sisters, Penny Coulson and Linda Murphy, and was predeceased by his sister, Marlene Coulson.

A private graveside service will be held August 20th for family and invited guests. For those who wish, donations in David's memory may be made to The Association of 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louises's).
