Obituary of Norma Irene Mason

Weeks after celebrating her 107th birthday, Norma Mason has passed away peacefully in Hospice Fredericton, leaving a legacy of loving kindness.

As a child, Norma’s great grandmother taught her three rules to live by - be yourself, be kind and be truthful. Norma practiced those values for more than a century and treated every person she met with grace and good humour. Everyone loved her.

From her childhood on a small Ontario dairy farm, to Business College graduate and secretary in the 1930s, to X-ray technician at the Peterborough Medical Clinic during WW2 to retail business owner for 32 years in Buckhorn ON, Norma modeled gender equity before it’s time.

She had a keen mind and loved to read and learn. Her mental recall of details was truly enviable, as was her thoughtfulness and generosity. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion and was always the first to reach out with emotional support when she sensed it was needed.

She was a wonderful cook and practiced her belief in healthy diet and regular exercise. She remained physically active even as a centenarian and was very proud that she didn’t take any “pills.”

She didn’t ever seek the spotlight, yet she was recognized many times for her dedicated community service, most recently quietly receiving The Silver Headed Cane from the Kiwanis Club of Fredericton as the community’s most senior citizen and lifelong youth mentor.

Norma is predeceased by her parents Wallace & Eva McInroy of Bonarlaw ON, her brother Murray, sister Wanda, husband of 56 years Tom Mason and dear friend Carl Bird.

She leaves her children Tom (Diana), Suzanne (Richard Cotter) & Brenda, grandsons Jeffrey (Carly), Andrew (Elizabeth) & Carey, great grandchildren India & Zai, nieces & nephews and many “friends that are family”.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 17th, 2026 at 11:00 am at Christ Church (Parish) Church, with Rev. Canon Chris Hayes and Rev. Canon Wandlyn Snelgrove as celebrants. Interment will take place at the Hermitage Catholic Cemetery later in the day. For those unable to attend the service, a livestream will be available at the following link: Funeral Livestream

Norma requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation be given to a program of your choice that feeds hungry children.

Her family wishes to thank those who loved her, befriended her and cared for her.

Norma’s lifelong focus was on brightening the lives of others, one small act of kindness at a time. Too many to count in the 39,136 days that she lived.

“In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.”  (Matthew 7:12)

Norma lived by the Golden Rule and would invite you to continue her legacy of kindness.
