Obituary of Joan Marion Shanks

Joan Marion (Deadman) Shanks passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in the early hours of June 24, 2026, at the age of 98.

Born on November 26, 1927, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Joan lived a long and remarkable life marked by devotion to her family and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. On August 2, 1947, she married the love of her life, Lloyd Austin Shanks, in her hometown of Moncton. Together, they built a life rooted in love, commitment, and family.

Following their marriage, Joan made her home in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where she resided for the remainder of her life. Over nearly a century, she witnessed extraordinary changes in the world while remaining a steadfast source of love, guidance, and support to those fortunate enough to know her.

Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lloyd Austin Shanks; her father, Albert Deadman; her mother, Helen Muriel (Dawson) Deadman; her sister, Helen Ruth (Deadman) Cassidy/Hendry; and her brothers, Paul Bernard Deadman and Albert Charles Deadman. She leaves behind her loving sons, Stephen Shanks (Linda) and Gregory Shanks (Debbie). She will be dearly missed by her cherished grandchildren, Tracey (Shanks) Steeves (Bradley), Karrie (Shanks) Newman (Sean), Kimberly Shanks, Gregory Shanks (Kristina), Amy (Shanks) Sharpe, and Katie (Shanks) Hill (Trent). She is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, all of whom adored their Greatie-Gram and brought her immense pride and joy. Along with many extended family members and friends they will carry forward the memories and lessons she shared.

Joan embraced life with enthusiasm and style. During her younger years, she and her close circle of girlfriends spent many happy days on the golf course, sharing friendship, laughter, and a healthy sense of competition. She was also highly active in the Fredericton branch of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), where she formed lasting friendships and contributed countless hours to her community. Known for her impeccable sense of style, Joan was considered a true fashionista and even enjoyed time as a fashion model at local events. Whether selecting the perfect outfit or tending to a bouquet, she appreciated beauty in all its forms. Joan had a lifelong love of flowers and took great joy in their colours, fragrances, and ability to brighten any space.

Joan found happiness in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid reader, faithfully completed her daily crossword puzzles, and looked forward to cherished Sunday dinners where stories, laughter, and family traditions were shared around the table. Her favorite place on earth was her cozy and modest cottage in Ocean Park, Maine, where she spent countless summer days making memories with family, swimming in the ocean, basking in the sunshine, and enjoying the peace of the seaside.

Those who knew Joan will fondly remember her spirited personality, sharp wit, and wonderful sense of humour. She had a saying for every occasion, often leaving family and friends laughing with expressions such as, "sweating like a hen hauling wood" or her reassuring reminder that, "It's not as serious as getting married." Joan was social, spirited, and never one to shy away from good conversation. She especially treasured her daily coffee visits with her son, Greg and daily phone calls from her son Steve, moments that brought her great comfort and joy.

Joan's legacy is one of love, laughter and family. She leaves behind generations of family who will forever cherish the stories she told, the wisdom she shared, and the love she gave so freely.

The family deeply appreciates the care, compassion, and support extended to Joan and her loved ones during this difficult time. A heartfelt thank you to Julie, Carrie, and Wendy—their cherished friendships with Joan will always be remembered. Her memory will forever be treasured.

At Joan’s request, no funeral or memorial service will be held.
