Obituary of John Allen Hamilton

The family of John Allen “Jack” Hamilton are sad to announce his passing at Hospice House Fredericton on July 1, 2026. Born on May 1, 1942 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Jack was the son of the late John and Muriel (Williams) Hamilton.

Jack will be missed by his loving wife and best friend of 64 years, Ernestine “Cookie” Breen; sons, Stephen, Peter, and Kevin; several beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Ann Keating (Paul), Brian (Pam), Robert (Gwen), Paul (Debbie), and Gordon (Angie); as well as many extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brothers, Bruce and Barry.

Jack’s career began early in life as he took a position with Meyer’s Photography Studio while still a teenager. This proved to be fortuitous as Jack remained in the picture taking business for forty-five years encompassing employment with CHSJ, the CBC, and a period of teaming with friend Cy Oram in their own Cojac Photography.  Adventure followed Jack around especially during his CBC days. He travelled to the Soviet Union to record a fishing agreement, was invited aboard the first trans-Atlantic flight of the Concord jet to chronicle that historic event, and made multiple trips to the North Atlantic to document the seal hunt.

Jack was known for his kindness, generosity, and enthusiastic spirit. He made friends wherever he went and will be missed by many including neighbours in Embassy Park in Florida where Cookie and Jack spent retirement winters and in Wickham N.B. their summer home.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation for all the help and support given by the Extramural Program, Hospice House, relatives, and friends during this difficult time. Your caring will not be forgotten.

A celebration of Jack’s life and interment will take place in the Wickham Cemetery on August 14th, 2026 at 1:00 pm. A reception will begin at the family house at 2:00 pm later that afternoon. For those who wish, donations in Jack’s name made to Hospice House or the Extramural Program would be greatly appreciated.
