Obituary of Allan George Gillies

It is with profound sadness that the family of Allan Gillies announce his passing in Fredericton on August 27, 2026 at the age of 89.  Born and raised in Fredericton Allan was the son of the late George Gilles and Idella (Miller).

Allan is survived by his partner, Mary Edith Keary; children, Jeffrey Gillies (Margaret),  Diana Westwood (Darrell),  Pamela Gillies, Bradley Gillies (Cheryl); grandchildren, Kyle Westwood (Vanessa), Rachel Westwood (Christopher Bugala), Kaitlyn Martin (Owen), Christopher Gillies, Taylor Gillies, Lauren Gillies (Ethan Plant), Ryan Gillies; and great-grandchildren,  Raelynn Bugala, Lily Bugala, Enzo Westwood, Nova Westwood, Cooper Bugala; sister-in-law, Virginia Kays and several nieces and nephews.

Allan was predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara Lynne; siblings, Malcolm Gillies, Gerald Gillies and Nancy Kirkis.

Allan graduated from UNB as a Mechanical Engineer in 1961. After marrying Lynne, they moved to Labrador City, where he began his career. They later settled in the Toronto area, where they raised their young family and created a warm and welcoming home. Allan and Lynne enjoyed working together on renovations, decorating and landscaping, taking pride in creating beautiful spaces. Their home was also a gathering place for family and friends.

They eventually relocated to Nova Scotia, where Allan retired from Carrier United Technologies in 1999.

The couple later returned to Allan’s roots in Fredericton, New Brunswick, settling on a beautiful property on the Head Pond of the Saint John River. It became a special gathering place, where their children and grandchildren enjoyed many memorable summer vacations.

As avid lifelong skiers, Allan and Lynne became active members of the local ski club at Crabbe Mountain. Their shared love of skiing brought them many lasting friendships and countless enjoyable times both on and off the hills.

Family was always at the heart of Allan’s life. He cherished time with his children, grandchildren and extended family, whether celebrating special occasions, visiting New Brunswick or enjoying summer days on the beaches of PEI. These gatherings and shared adventures created many treasured memories.

After Lynne’s passing in 2010, following 49 years together, Allan was fortunate to meet his partner, Mary. They shared 16 years filled with companionship and many special moments. They especially enjoyed summers at their cottage in Four Roads on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where they relaxed, enjoyed the outdoors and spent time together. Their years together brought Allan great happiness and were a meaningful chapter in his life.

 The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff on 4th Floor, NE wing at Everett Chalmers Hospital for the exceptional care, kindness and compassion shown to Allan and his family. Their support and dedication brought comfort during a difficult time.

At Allan’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service.
