Like my family and Fredericton, Auntie Carolyn has a played a big role in my life with many memories that have had lasting effects. It's impossible for me to think about these without tearing up and feeling grateful for everything that she shared with me, my parents and sister, my wife and children, and throughout our bigger Stewart and Meehan family.
Her abilities in many crafts are well known and appreciated by many. The taste and joy of her baking, especially her coconut cream pies (the lemon meringue was also good!), remains special to me. Suzanne and our children remember her cross-stitch, quilts, and especially the Christmas stockings that we enjoy each and every year. She shared her love through these crafts but also in her presence. She was always there at the airport when my family and I would arrive for our many trips to Fredericton. The many family Christmas dinners at her place are much of what Christmas was for my childhood. These are all sweet memories.
Looking back, these touch points in our families' lives seem to have been the foundation for her community support through her activities in church, military and serving families, and Skate Canada. Her connection to Fredericton was deep, and this despite having travelled and lived throughout the world. Through these "smaller" touches, she lived a big life and had a large impact on many.
These activities would be a full life for anyone, something everyone would look back on with joy, but her biggest impact was through her strength of character. Seemingly unflappable, endlessly practical, and able to take on any challenge big or small, I can't think of any time that Auntie Carolyn didn't know what to do, how to do it, and how to take it on in a way that we can all learn from. She was then, is, and remains someone that everyone looked up to.
Even though her mark has always been there, and always impacted me personally, it's taken her passing for me to fully realize how many she touched. Perhaps the loss and the missing we are all feeling from her moving on makes it easier to see how we are left with the strength and lessons she has passed on.
My heart goes out to everyone, especially close family members, that are missing her now. I hope that the lasting impact of her life, both big and small, helps this heal in time. Between now and then, love those around you in the way that she set as an example.

My favourite childhood memories were of Christmas’ in New Brunswick with my Mom’s family. Every year we would fly from Calgary to Fredericton, always arriving after dark. My Auntie Carolyn would arrange for my brother and I to get a special kids meals onboard via her job in the military aviation industry. Once on the final plan to Fredericton, I would choose a window seat because when the plane stopped I could view the arrivals terminal clearly. Upon landing I would look to the arrival terminal windows to see our family waving wildly at the plane. We would reciprocate by waving wildly back at them, waiting to be seen too. Auntie’s face would light up once she saw us and everyone would await with excitement while we walked across the tarmac to the terminal. It was an annual joyous family reunion and I looked forward to it all year. Christmas dinner at Auntie Carolyn and Uncle Ron’s house was the highlight of Christmas Day.
My Auntie Carolyn often referred to me by my first and middle name, ‘…and how are you Miss Lindsay Anne?’ It is distinct to my Auntie, as the only other times I was referred to by two names was if I was in trouble!
Auntie took on the role of the head of the family when our matriarch, my Nana (Olive Meehan) passed away in 2006. She was well suited for the role and took it seriously. She and Uncle Ron looked in on me twice on their travels while I was in school. Visiting me while I was attending Bishops University in Quebec and when I was at chiropractic school in Portland Oregon.
Auntie taught me to cross stitch. A hobby I embraced when much younger and recently returned to. One Christmas when I was in university, my Auntie was distressed to find out that my knitted Christmas stocking had gone missing. My brother Matthew and I solved the problem by making one out of duct tape. The following November a package arrived for me from Auntie Carolyn, and it was a beautiful cross stitched stocking front with a quilted back. Over the subsequent years, every person in our family, including spouses and children received a cross stitched stocking. Once the family stopped growing, all twelve of us had a cherished Christmas stocking from Auntie Carolyn.
We treasure so many of Auntie’s quilts. She sent one for each of my children when they were born, and she made me one as a gift for graduation from chiropractic school. The last time we visited my Auntie Carolyn in Fredericton, she called me into the living room where she had several quilts laid out, urging me to choose just one more.
Like one of her quilts, memories of my Auntie are distinct and backstitched together in the blocks of my life. She was a formidable force and a kind and generous woman. We are full of sorrow for her passing and send Love to my Uncle Ron, my Cousin Greg and Deanna, and my cousin Cheryll, Rob, Will and Sara.
With Love,
Lindsay, Brad, Caelyn and Nolan

I will never forget the last time I saw Carolyn, because the interaction was just ‘so Carolyn’. It was at the DECH where we were both at the information desk. She had her back to me when I spoke her name. Carolyn turned to see who spoke and without even thinking she embraced me in the warmest of hugs. It was such a pure hug, there was something almost spiritual about it. I’m know I will never forget that hug.
My deepest of sympathies.
