I am now just learning of the passing of my dear old friends Herb and Helen. We meet through car racing in the late 60’s and had many great times together. There was also skiing at Sugarloaf, Maine and flying to Quebec City. Over the years there were visits to Halifax and long chats on the phone with Helen. The last call was around the time they sold their beautiful home. As. I sit here in disbelief after reading Herb’s obituary and also learning of Helen’s passing, I offer my sincere condolences to both families.

Herb was an UNB classmate. Of the many memories I might write I have chosen only one to share. In June of 1966 Herb, Helen and the Maynard's planned a weekend trip to Toronto in Herb's Barracuda to attend a race at Mosport. (Up Friday night; back Sunday daytime.) Knowing my finance was working in Toronto, Herb invited me along. Herb did the driving except for a 200 mile stretch of the 401 when I took the wheel. All four fell asleep! Imagine Herb's reaction when he woke up two hours later! (You do the math.) He never told me the engine had the habit of throwing oil. Fortunately, the engine survived. On the return trip (when I was not asked to drive) I was cramped in the back seat with the Maynard's when Helen turned around wanting to say "How's your ass, Dick?" but it came out as the now famous statement "How's your Dick, ass?)
Our mechanical engineering class of 1964 is a tightly knit group and have been very faithful at attending five-year reunions. Herb and Helen been part of a core keeping the group together and hosting us privately. They will be deeply missed.

My late husband, John, then a newcomer to Fredericton, met Herb through motorsport in 1967. Herb and Helen came to our wedding in 1969, and through the years were welcoming hosts and good friends. Although Helen passed away two days after my husband in 2018, Herb came to his funeral. That is the kind of man he was, a good friend. My sincere condolences to the family.

Our condolences to Herb's extended family. My first memory of Herb was watching him race his Castrol Green Mini at the Debertt, NS Raceway. Later I spent 21 years working with Herb at NGL on the "Board" plants prior to his retirement. Herb and Helen were great people, and my son and I enjoyed many evenings with them at the Candiens games. Herb was definitely an Engineer's engineer and mentored many of my generation, Also he was very proud of his Newfoundland heritage. Anna and Harry Olive

Marie, Dave and the rest of Herb's family please accept our sympathy on the loss of Herb. We are shocked and saddened to hear. Our friendship goes back to 1955 when we lived in the United Church Residence in St. Johns. We have continued our friendship over the 67 years. Helen's passing was hard on Herb but he held it together and made the most of it. To his credit. It showed what a strong person he was. It was a good run and we feel blessed and thankful for his friendship.
