Obituary of Maria Dorothea Gotelind Vietinghoff
It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Vietinghoff on September 2, 2022. Her death occurred at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton following a brief illness.
Maria “Mia” Dorothea Gotelind (von Wahl) Vietinghoff was born October 12, 1929 in Reval (Tallinn), Estonia. Following the Second World War, her family moved to Germany, where she met and married Alfred Vietinghoff in January, 1954. Maria and Alfred lived on 3 continents, with a son born on each one. They finally settled in the Upper Ottawa Valley, Ontario, living in Arnprior and Pembroke, and seasonally on their hobby tree farm, near Golden Lake. Predeceased by her husband, Maria moved to Fredericton in 2013.
Maria is survived by her sons, Andre (Virginia Sabile), Leon (Susan Gavin) in Fredericton NB and Henry (Shawna MacKinnon) in Lower Sackville NS; grandchildren, Alex (Shauna Chase), Christina, Suzanna, Caleb, Michaela, and Andreas; great grandson, George, as well as her siblings, Elisabeth, Volker and Brigitte.
In addition to her parents and husband, Maria was predeceased by her siblings, Ina, Hildegard and Hans-Heinrich.
Maria was a quiet person, who enjoyed reading, nature and classical music. She was a spiritual person, with a strong faith in God. She enjoyed socializing with friends and family, and after Alfred’s retirement in 1989, they made frequent trips to visit her siblings in Germany.
Thank you to staff and residents of Farraline Place, Alleira Living, Eden Villa, York Care Centre, along with the DECH Emergency and 3-East departments who cared for Maria.
Arrangements have been entrusted to McAdam’s Funeral Home. For those who wish to do so, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choosing. A ceremony and interment will be held in summer 2023 in Augsburg, Ontario.
