I didn't know Gavin personally, but I knew his children. A little more Wilton since he was in my group when he was two. I know they're great kids and that they had such a great dad. I can't imagine how hard it must be to lose their dad at such a young age. I hope that he can watch over his family from where he is.

My memories of Gavin are of his years at Lone Rock School and the comments, tributes, etc. about him now show just what he was like when he was young – kind, polite, respectful, willing to help, and, of course, smart!
From K/Gr 1 helping fellow students in Mrs. May's class to understand directions, correct colors, play fairly, and so on, to always impressing Mr. Pirot with all the extra knowledge he had on different subjects – in the days before www and social media; he loved to read!
He was one of those students that every school wants to have, and as an adult - the same!
As we know, Death is no respecter of age; he left too soon and will be missed. May your memories be many and come to mind often. Thinking of you. Zoni (Ted) Courtenay

My sincerest sympathies to Luella, Lennox, Vesta, Wilton, and all of Gavin's family and friends on your loss. I had the great pleasure of getting to know Gavin through CWSS and various board activities that we collaborated on. He was a gracious host, a gifted scientist, and a humble leader. I have great memories of watching in admiration as he chaired Local Arrangements for the society's 2016 Annual Meeting. The meeting went off flawlessly. There was no detail he hadn't considered and no request that wasn't accommodated. While Gavin has left us too soon, he has left a legacy through the research he led, the scientists he inspired and the friendships he forged. We will miss you Gavin.

I would like to extend my condolences to Gavin's family. I am one of the many New Brunswick farmers who used Gavin as a weed & herbicide resource person. He had a trial on my strawberry farm shortly after coming to New Brunswick; we still have a problem with that weed he was trying to control. The last time I saw Gavin was at a Zoom meeting during Covid where he was talking about the pesticide minor use registration program & how he represented all the farmers in New Brunswick on this program. The agriculture industry of New Brunswick has lost a gifted & talented gentleman. Again I want to express my heart felt condolences to Gavin's family. The news of the loss of Gavin has filled me with much sadness. A few years ago we briefly worked together on organizing a session for one of the meetings of the Canadian Weed Science Society. I got to know him as a much appreciated and very competent professional. However, it didn't take long to also find out that he was a true family man. I can only imagine how much his passing must be so very painful for those closest to him, especially his beloved wife and children. I can only offer you my most sincere condolences.

I have so many memories of Gavin in his younger teenage years - from his perfectly correct 4H record books - (a little messy, but concise and zero errors) to some of the antics he and his buddies took part in when they would have been better served going to bed early. He was always very witty and quiet but had a lot of thoughts whirling in that brilliant mind of his that he only showed with that little half grin. Thank you for sharing the beautiful service with those of us that live in Saskatchewan. All the words from Phil, Kirk, fellow employees, the minister, and passage chosen by Connie were poignant and thoughtful. Life is not always easy or fair, but we usually manage to get through what is thrown our way. You are all in our thoughts. Take care,

I’ve had the privilege of working with Gavin, for the last 13 years or so, in my role as the provincial minor use coordinator for British Columbia. He was a colleague and a friend. One who was so kind, generous with his knowledge, and the wise voice in all government meetings we attended. His confidence, good nature, and quick wits just made you want to connect with him. He will be greatly missed across the country. My deepest condolences to Gavin’s family.

Gavin was without equal. Never worked with a person that brought more knowledge, intelligence and commitment to the table. Gavin was simply one of the best agronomists I came across in my almost 40 year career. Working with him was never work, it was always a pleasure. Gavin was gifted with a sense of perspective and sense of humour that matched his intelligence. Luella, I can’t imagine the empty space a person of his character would leave in the lives of his family. Please accept my deepest sympathies to you, the children and his entire family. The world has certainly lost a great man, friend, colleague and family man. I met Gavin though work, first at the minor use meetings in Ottawa. He was quick to show me the ropes, introduce me to a great group of people and showed me my first taste of craft beer! Although, I couldn't keep up with the clock tower at that time. Beer festivals won't be the same, including dashing for donuts! He was always willing to help and point me in the right direction when guidance was needed. Always a great wealth of knowledge and will be truly missed. My thoughts are with Luella, Lennox, Vesta, Wilton and extended family. He will truly be missed.

Dear Luella and family,
I had the pleasure of working with Gavin for several years. In Saskatoon, he was a summer student with my research program and then moved on to do his Master of Science degree with myself, Gary Peng and Rick Holm as supervisors. He was my colleague after he moved to New Brunswick as he helped to collect field data for registration of a bio herbicide that we were developing. As long as I have known him, Gavin was a considerate, cheerful, optimistic guy who gave 100% to everything he did. He was a wonderful student, colleague and friend. I am sorry for your loss.

I was fortunate enough to work with Gavin for many years in the Minor Use Program. I always enjoyed our morning chats before the craziness started at the annual priorities meetings. In the later years we would make sure to exchange local craft beers from Ontario and New Brunswick. He was very proud of the work he did but even more proud to be a father and husband. He always had a smile on his face, which was even bigger when sharing photos of his family. I’m deeply sadden by the passing of a dear friend. My most sincere and heartfelt thoughts are with the family and friends of Gavin. This news has come as a shock and of the most sad kind. I worked with Gavin in a parallel role as provincial minor use coordinator for Ontario for many years. At almost every national meeting, Gavin and I would sit beside one another and he would keep me in check and help me get back on track. I learned so much from Gavin about New Brunswick and we shared a love of football as well and I remember him showing me the green and white of the SK roughriders. Gavin was always full of knowledge and better yet memory and I could always depend upon these things whenever I called or emailed him. His passing is a huge loss for us, but mostly of all for his dear family which he treasured so much. Please accept my most sincere condolences and know that my thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Gavin was a great friend and colleague. Professional he was the best, always in our corner and willing to help out anyway he could. He became a fast friend even though we lived at other ends of the country and only saw each other once or twice a year at the most. He would usually message me at 3am keeping me up to date on his family, work and of course his latest favourite beer.
My favourite Gavin memory was when the busness was done, that Green Riders hat came out (not sure from where but he alway had it), his perpetual grin doubled as he had a new brewery try. We would catch up on our current family lives and tell each other stories about growing up on our family farms… so different, yet the same.
To Luella, their children and all Family and Friends, my deepest sympathies. Gavin will be deeply missed, but his memories will make us all stronger. I miss you Buddy!
