How to say goodbye
Time does not move from here to there,
Like dates on a calendar
But stops and circles
And lingers like a scent on the breeze
Recalling us to something beyond our senses
A mind meld or a portal
Working upon us
You are not here
I cannot visit you, or walk with you, or take road trips with you
Or do any of the things we have done
I ache, like a musical note dwelling in my mind
I am calm but lost
Life is a mystery
An endless cycle of love and pain
There are infinite possibilities
For a spirit brave enough to fly
And kind enough to teach
And you say “Let’s get some paper and a sharp pencil for me and another for you…”
And, like a child in a field of clover
Or a chair by a window and a woodstove
We find our way
You are here, in the folds of time
Wrapped around us, like a soft quilt of memories
Tattered and worn
Transporting us, like the colours of the sunset rippling on the river
We move inward and onward
As we learn to live without you
With you, always

Dear Sylvia, Haifa and Families,
It is with our deepest sympathy that we reach out to you all with our condolences for your loss of Mackie. We always were blessed to have him for a cousin and impressed with all his accomplishments in his life. He was much like Herman in nature and had an extremely kind soul. May God give you reason for taking him home and I am sure he is reunited at this time with all his loved ones that passed before him.
Our Kindest Regards,
Heather, Anthony and Family (Turner)

My condolences to Sylvia and family on the loss of a truly great man. He was not only a favourite of many students
but also many parents. Many students would not have got though school without his help including one of my sons. He was the best. Always kind and patient. Thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

Sylvia and family:
Sorry to hear of Malcolm’s passing. He was truly a Renaissance Man in every sense of the word. I first met Malcolm as a member of his inaugural grade seven class at Cambridge Rural High School in September 1974. I have fond memories of his many anecdotes about his escapades as a “fish out of water country boy from Nova Scotia” at McGill and other worldly adventures prior to joining us at CRHS. Simply put, he made learning fun. His passion for music and the arts was evident by the efforts he invested in directing many school plays throughout the years. He made our drama productions “must attend standing room only” sellout events in the community. I had the pleasure of seeing and speaking with Malcolm during the ensuing years and benefited from his tutelage in calculus when I attended UNB in the early 1980’s. He was a man ahead of his time and encouraged me to study Computer Science “so you can write your own ticket” as he put it. I appreciate the calculus help he provided to my nephew recently as well. I also had the pleasure of collaborating with Malcom and Vyvyan Frost a few years ago to write some music for the Stepping Stones choir. The world is a better place because Malcom was in it. Once again, my condolences on Malcolm’s passing. He is gone but will not soon be forgotten.

I was saddened to hear about the death of Mr. Miller. I was a student at Cambridge Rural High School and he was without doubt my favorite teacher. He had a gift to make every student feel that they might have been his favorite too. He made math fun and if you didn’t understand one method of solving a problem, he would introduce another method to help arrive at the correct answer. He established a student theater group, giving countless hours of his own time to prepare for Provincial festivals. I remember him as bit quirky in the best of ways and from my experience, a teacher that every parent wishes their child could have. It was to my delight when several years ago I discovered Mr. Miller and his wife Sylvia walking their black Labs past my house on a regular basis. After pointing him out to a neighbor and telling them he was my favorite teacher, they asked if I had ever told him that. No, I had not. Shortly thereafter I ran into him and Sylvia, they seemed to be a pair rarely separated, and introduced myself not knowing if he would remember me or not. After 40+ years he not only remembered me, we had a great conversation that included other former students and staff. Deepest sympathy to the family, remembering your loved one. Suzanne Sypher

Mr. Miller was caring and compassionate man. He always took the time to show his students the extra time they needed it.
As a past student of his from Cambridge Rural High School. I feel blessed to have had him in my life during those times of growth. Memories are fond an bring a light when I think of him. At the market he would talk to my mom an always ask how the girls were doing. You will be miss by many who had the chance to get to know you .

We were so heartbroken to hear of Malcolm’s passing. His sharp wit and brilliant mind were only surpassed by his love for life and his family. He had a way of marvelling at whatever you discussed and often added so much more depth to the subject. His legacy will live on in all who knew him. Sending you all love.

My condolences to the family. I was a student of “Mr. Miller” @ Cambridge-Narrows school for my junior high years. He took a special interest in me in Math and gave me more challenging lessons to work on independently. That set me up to excel and achieve a BMath at university and go on to have a successful career in IT and beyond. I have always had a special memory of all he did to encourage me and what that all led to. I have much to thank him for. RIP. Mr Miller.
