Obituary of Rebecca Lynn Wood

Our courageous Rebecca was lovingly called "Becca, Reba, The Baby Whisperer and Little Bear". Her partner, Scott Somerville and daughter, Mackayla Wood will miss her presence in the cozy home she helped to create. She will remain in the hearts of her sisters, Stephanie Wood (Heather Gregory) and Jennifer Wood Tym (Case); parents, Melanie Menzies Wood and Ron Wood, and Grammie Mavis Wood. Rebecca had a very special relationship with her niece, Lillian Tym, nephews, Pieter and Benjamin Tym, and Elliott Wood. Also mourning are aunts, Lynn McCay of BC, Jane Gibbs (Dave), Aleta Wood and uncle Stephen Wood all of NB; cousins, Kolin Wood of NB, Ryan (Kalah) and Graham McCay all of AB, Jamie (Laura) and Matthew (Amy) Spurway all of NS, and Scott’s brother, Craig (Rebecca) of NS, as well as Scott’s grandmother, Alice Boardman of NB. Best friend since birth, Johanna Olsen Lynch, has been her "person". Annette Olsen and Marge Zimmerman were her second mamas. Special childhood friends, Jennifer Tucker and Stephanie Woodworth will miss her dearly. Rebecca is predeceased by her grandfather, Gerald Wood; uncle, Jerry Wood; her Nana, Wilma Menzies (Norris), and her soul-mate Weimaraner, Murphy. Scott’s parents, Cindy and Ed Somerville, and Mackayla’s Grampie and Nannie Murray (George and Denise) were very special to Rebecca, their love was reciprocated. Rebecca always made others smile with her sense of humor and light-heartedness, from her Saint John team of oncology nurses, oncologist Dr. M. Burnell, her neurosurgeon, Dr. G. Kolyvas, (with such gracious hands and skill operated 5 times in 4+ years), to the Fredericton blood technicians with whom she befriended, especially Pat Tobin. When you hear an owl hoot, see a hummingbird fly, hear the band "Queen", catch the scent of patchouli, or find an Inukshuk, think of our blond-haired and sky-blue eyed, Rebecca. She could ride a horse, played on the LHHS girl’s hockey team, swam like a fish, played the piano, and created unique artwork. She adored the children with whom she worked as a kindergarten assistant at Connaught Street School, then later at Kids Korral Daycare. Every summer, Rebecca loved her Lake George life with family and friends. She loved to read, write, and could quip lines from movies or songs making others guess from where it came. She loved to cook with and for Mackayla and Scott. Rebecca was blessed and dearly loved by Scott, whose patience and care enabled her to remain at home these last few months while under the care of dedicated extramural nurses, mainly Julie Roy, and family friend palliative care Dr. Gordon McDonald. Thank you to all of the phenomenal Fredericton Hospice staff, and our family doctor, Dr. S. Athar. Rebecca was our gift, and we are all better people for having her in our lives. "The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why."
