I met Shirley when I worked at St. Anne's Lodge, and was struck by how resilient she was and how eager to make the Lodge a vital entity. She had great ideas about programming, suggesting speakers, entertainers, and workshop leaders. She didn't let her disability hold her back, but joined in with enthusiasm. I am unable to attend the funeral due to a previous commitment, but I want Joan to know how much we all valued Shirley's contribution to Lodge life.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Turny

Hi Joan,
Cecil and JoAnne ( Geldart) Reid here.
My sister Diana relayed the news of your double loss, Rilla and Shirley. We are sorry to hear of your sisters deaths and know that rest and peace is being experienced. I did get to connect with Shirley in Fredericton over the years and always so precious to be with her.
When I think of Rilla , I remember her sense of humour and her participation with our teams in good ol' TVRHS :)
Both Shirley and Rilla lived a perseverance, true grit and in contrast such gentleness in their heart and smiles.
God love you and your family!
Hugs, JoAnne & Cecil

So sorry for the loss of this lovely lady! My Mom was also living at York Care Center for three years, and that is how we met Shirley. I used to go to visit Mom, and always played the piano for the residents in their living area in the evening. She always sat and listened in her wheel chair, and was so grateful. A very kind sweet soul was Shirley! Dad and I went especially to see her once again, after Mom passed. She will be missed.

All my life Shirley has been such an inspiration. We were cousins living in Halifax and as she went through her medical investigations she and other relatives stayed with us. Your strength never flagged and you showed all of us that obstacles are there but can be overcome. Thank you for your example of how face life with good spirit and determination. It was a privilege to be related to you and to have known you all my life.
To Joan and family. Losing Shirley and Rilla so close together is like a tidal wave. Much love and support coming from our family to you!
Hugs Jean and Bob

Blessings and Hugs to Joan and family. My favourite remembrance of Shirley, was when I had learned to read, and was reading everything I could find, saw her picture in the Tobique Valley Regional High School year book. Her profile said one of her favourite things was "Making fudge for the Grade 12's". As a little girl I thought that was such a nice thing to do, and over the years I came to see Shirley as the "giving person" she was . Her knowledge of family history and connections rivalled Aunt Irene's and Shirley became, for me, the "go to" person for family information. Ever gentle and generous, she lived up to the beauty of her name, Shirley Cordelia. A precious cousin, a precious soul.

Shirley was a trooper! never giving up on anything she tried to do. A caring, compassionate and generous person. She always greeted everyone with a smile although she may have been in pain. She tried to be as independent as possible. Shirley stayed as a guest at my house several times and I had to admire her determination. She and I flew to Vancouver to visit her sister, Joan. Sometimes one of the crew would address me about her when she was right there sitting in her wheelchair. I would say "Miss Tapley can hear you and she is smarter than me. Please speak to her." Dear Shirley, you will always be remembered with fondness.
