Obituary of Mary Louise (Clarke) Houlston

Mary Louise Houlston (nee Clarke) passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in New Maryland, NB, on Dec. 16th. Born in 1928, she was the middle daughter of Bertha (Sprague) and H. Allison Clarke of Miramichi, NB. She was predeceased by her husband Robert E. Houlston, her son-in-law William (Bill) Webster and her older sister Marjorie Brebner.

Left with a wealth of memories, family traditions and a lifetime of unconditional love are her three daughters - Ann Rutledge (Ted Misztela) of Truro, NS, Dorothy Webster (Bill, deceased) of New Maryland, NB, with whom she lived; and Cheryl Faseruk (Alex) of St. John’s, NL. She is also survived by her sister, Edith Kieley Allard (Manotick, ON), 7 grandchildren - Mark Rutledge, Krista Skutovich, Karen Smith, Eric Webster, Joanne MacGillivray, Andrew Faseruk, Michael Faseruk and 8 great grandchildren - Logan, Cassidy and Paige Skutovich, Rayen, Aurora and Mira Smith, Alex and Allie MacGillivray. Also left with fond memories of a 60 year friendship is Olive Trevors of Miramichi, the best neighbour a family could ever have.

Mary was a lifelong member of St. James and St. John United Church in Miramichi where she was an active member of the UCW and Senior Choir. She was a Charter member and Past Worthy Matron of the Prince Andrew Chapter #42 Order of the Eastern Star. Her skill at crossword puzzles was extraordinary and family legend has it that she did them in ink because she never made a mistake. She introduced her girls to live theatre and summer road trips, and instilled in them a love of music and choral singing. Always open to a spontaneous picnic or board game, she cherished our time together and her family will be forever grateful for the fun, laughter and warmth of her caring love.

Cremation and arrangements are entrusted to McAdam’s Funeral Home, Fredericton, NB. Please visit their website at www.mcadamsfh.com to send a message or sign the book of condolences. Interment and a service to celebrate Mary’s life will take place in late spring in Miramichi. Donations in Mary’s memory to St. James and St. John United Church, Miramichi, NB, or to a charity of one’s choice are appreciated.
