Obituary of George Ewart Walls
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Ewart Walls on January 6th , 2023, at Hospice House Fredericton. Born on August 28th, 1953, in Moncton, NB, he was the son of the late George Philip and Gladys Margaret (Gaskin) Walls.
George was a lifelong and passionate athlete, playing rugby, hockey and golf for many years, in addition to being an excellent gymnast in his teenage years, and having a great love for skiing, both downhill and cross-country. He was also an avid fisherman, a woodworker, and whittler, who had a very wry sense of humor, which he passed onto his children.
An explorer at heart, he could be described as an adventurer, traveling all over the world playing rugby, and for work. An electrical engineer by trade, George had worked many years in the Northwest Territories, Labrador, Jamaica and all over the United States. While on his travels with spare time, George would often be found doing something interesting to add to his multitude of stories and memories, including becoming an experienced scuba diver over his time spent in Jamaica. George did so much, and always lived life to the fullest. With his explorer spirit, and love for the great outdoors, you could say that he was born in the wrong century.
With George’s passion for rugby, he was a long time, proud and founding member of the Fredericton Loyalist Rugby Club. He considered the Loyalists community as his family, and put his blood, sweat and tears into the club, on and off the pitch, throughout his many years there. One of the last games George played was when he was in his 50s, and they needed an extra player. To no one’s surprise he suited up, gave it his all, and also scored a try before the game ended, showing that age is just a number(and showing the next generations how the old boys did it). In his later years when George could, he would be supporting the club in various ways, by being on the berm watching his fellow teammates, helping out with maintenance, crafting and repairing what he could, and purchasing a cold drink or two when relaxing there. George’s hockey passion led him to the Rentals Hockey team, where he played for several years, and left his all on the ice when he played. With all of George’s adventures and passions, he made many cherished friends. He was a beloved son, husband, father, brother and friend to many. His legacy will live on with all those who knew him.
He will be greatly missed by the love of his life, Norma (Kamermans) Walls; children, Erika Walls, Matt Walls(Lauren), Amanda Walls (Mother, Lori MacDougal), and J.J. Davis (son of Norma); brother, David Walls; sisters, Barbara Walls (Gary) and Patricia Takahashi (Calvin), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We will all miss our many adventures together.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his brother, Philip Walls.
In keeping with George’s wishes, there will be no formal services. A gathering to celebrate George’s life will be held at the Loyalist Rugby Club, 20 Cityview Ave, Fredericton, on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 2pm. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Hospice House Fredericton.
