Obituary of John Eldon Cooper

The Reverend John Eldon Cooper, of Fredericton, passed away on April 28, 2023 following a brief illness, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, New Brunswick. Born on July 5, 1950 in Moncton, New Brunswick, he was the son of the late William Thomas Cooper and the late Inez Roxanna (Rathburn)Cooper .

John is survived by brothers, William (Elaine), Robert (Julia), Thomas (Sharron); aunt, Joan Morris; cousin, Roberta Morris; as well as nieces and nephews Zoe, Bill, Jill, Romy, Debra, Andrew, Laura, and Julie.

He was predeceased by sister, Roxanna, brother Benjamin, niece Rebecca, nephew Joshua and uncle Eldon Rathburn.

Upon graduating in Accounting from Community College in Moncton, he worked at the Royal Bank of Canada in six branches over four years. In 1977 in Israel, he served as a Christian volunteer for six months, then backpacked through Europe for three months. In 1978 he began three years of study in theology at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. In 1981 he was ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada and over 18 years served in six New Brunswick parishes, and as part time chaplain to Restigouche Hospital Centre, Campbellton and Universities Chaplain in Fredericton.

John was a caring and empathetic person. In later years he had an interest in Current Affairs, television, music, writing and walking.

A visitation will be held at St. Anne's Anglican Chapel of Ease on Thursday, June 8th, 2023 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm with a Memorial Service immediately following at 2:00 in the chapel. Interment will take place on June 9, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John. Donations to the Huntington Society of Canada in John's name would be appreciated by the family.
