Obituary of Michael Francis Maloney

On May 10^th, 2023, Dr. Michael Francis Maloney passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family. Michael was born in Peterborough, Ontario to Rita (Walsh) and George Maloney on October 20^th, 1950. His early life was spent between Peterborough and the Walsh family farm in Asphodel township, where his enthusiasm for animal welfare and farm life flourished. After university, Michael built a life in New Brunswick as a large animal veterinarian and pathologist with the Provincial department of Agriculture. In his spare time he was an avid carpenter, and pursued his passion for Agricultural history with the University of Edinburgh.

Michael is survived by the love of his life Gail (Slade), with whom he shared a beautiful life with for 45 years, and married for 43 years. Michael is predeceased by their first daughter, Sarah (1981), and both his parents George (1977) and Rita (2019). Michael is survived by his two daughters, Martha (Edward), and Clare MacKinnon (James), and his three grandchildren who were his whole world: Presley, Lola and Finneas. He also leaves behind two sisters Diane Gifford (Jack) and Marilyn Self (Roger), nephews, nieces, cousins, and two aunts.

Michael will forever be remembered for his generous heart, passion for learning, and contagious laugh. He was a devoted animal lover and always available to tend to an animal in need. Michael’s happiest moments were those spent with his family, whether it be Sunday drives for ice cream with Gail and their dog, riding rollercoasters at Santa’s Village, or building whirligigs in the garage with his grandchildren.

There will be no visitation and a private burial. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to the IWK Children’s Hospital in Michael’s memory.
