Obituary of Sassimint Grace

Sassimint Grace, formerly known as Susan Elizabeth Blunston, Fowler, Currie or Steen, born March 27th, 1960 in Fredericton, NB, went on to her next mission, on May 30, 2023.

She was a sociology graduate of Saint Thomas University and was most happy at her job at the John Howard Society of Fredericton, as assistant to the Living Our Choices Course co-ordinator Katheryn Watters, and later as the Adult Education Program Co-ordinator.

She advocated for the disenfranchised through letters to the editor and public protest, and volunteered at the Fredericton Food Bank and the Minto Community Resource Center.

Sassi wrote and self-published four books with the kind support and guidance of The Wilmot Writers Group.

Sassi felt that her life began when she stopped drinking at the age of 21, and over the years has been loved and encouraged by the members of three Twelve-Step fellowships.

She is survived by her only child (The Apple of Her Eye, The Light of Her Life) Amanda Elizabeth Blaney-Steen, four grandchildren, Casey, Olivia, Baylee and Autumn, and a beautiful great-granddaughter Scarlette. She also leaves behind a sister, Sabrina Harnish (Scott), and a brother, Daniel Fowler (Mary-Lyn), two nieces, Shealynne and Kristen, and six nephews, Connor, Jack and Hunter, Ethen, Mitchell and Zachery, as well as one special cousin, Kelly Dawn McNeely.

Sassi felt she was blessed with the most wonderful, generous and kind friends in the world, and wouldn’t try to list them all, afraid to hurt someone by leaving them out. But the one friend that must be here is Patricia Price. She and Sassi met in their teens, and have walked hand and hand through all their struggles and triumphs for the last 43 years.

The celebration of Sassi’s life will be held at 2 pm Tuesday June 6, at Wilmot United Church, Carlton St., Fredericton, NB,  with Rev. Alice Finnamore officiating.  Reception to follow.

The service will be livestreamed, http://www.wilmotuc.nb.ca, and will be available on the Wilmot United Church Youtube channel, https://www.youtube.com/c/wilmotunitedchurch

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to organizations in Sassi’s memory that help low income or homeless people: Fredericton Food Bank, the Community Kitchen, or Wednesdays at Wilmot.
