Obituary of John Frederick Thompson

John Frederick (Fred) Thompson, went to his heavenly reward peacefully at home on the morning of Sunday, June 25th, 2023. He was a life-long resident of Fredericton and was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a faithful friend to many and, above all, a dedicated Christian.

Fred was born on March 24, 1936, to the late Ernest and Minnie Thompson. He was married to the love of his life, Ruby (MacDonald) for 67 years. He began working at Unipress at the Daily Gleaner at the age of 15 and retired 45 years later. He was a faithful member of Capital Community Church and was an active member involved in many facets of the church since his youth. He also sang bass with the Gospel Messengers Quartet throughout the Atlantic Provinces for several years.

Fred was an incredible Christ-like example to his family. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Bonny Lyons (Rickey) in 1985. His memory will be cherished by his daughter, Brenda Grant (Ed) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, son, Brad Thompson (Regina) of Guatemala, and Ricky & Shelly Lyons of Quispamsis, NB. Fred took great pride and joy in his grandchildren… Jeremy Lyons (Sue), Erica Beach (John),Emily Thornton (Paul), Josh Lyons, Benji Grant (Janessa), Alex Grant (Cydney), Anthony Thompson (Tabatha), Ryan Thompson (Sarah), and Tyrell Thompson. He loved his great grandchildren, Alyia, Rayanna, Micah, Hunter, Lennon, Myles, Archie, Emerson, Ozias, Tyler, Quinton, Ashley, and great-great grandchild, Raelynn.

There are many who looked to Fred as a father figure throughout the years. His life and love of others impacted those who came into contact with him.

Fred is survived by his brother, Ron Thompson of Fredericton, his sister, Mary MacDonald (Murch) of Fredericton, as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Capital Community Church on Thursday, June 29th from 6pm to 8pm, and  Friday, June 30th from 11am to 12:30pm. The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 30th at 1pm at Capital Community Church at 71 Downing Street, Fredericton NB. Officiated by Rev. Jack Leaman. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Guatemala Missions Fund in Fred’s memory.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to express their love for Fred and for our family. May God bless each of you.
