An angel who walked the earth and showed compassion and caring for everyone she met. I had a great pleasure of teaching with Yvonne for 6 years at F.H.S. Every day there was a kind gesture, be it cakes, cookies, flowers, etc. that was left discreetly on someone's desk at school. She and I shared the love of Broadway musicals and we spent many glorious hours comparing notes. She was always there with a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Dear sweet Yvonne, God has called back one of his angels after years of altruism and love of people. May you rest and be at peace. I will miss you but I shall never forget the wonderful human being that you were.

I am very sad to hear about Yvonne. It was my great pleasure to teach with her for many years at FHS.
Yvonne was always cheerful and engaged not only with her students, but concerned about the well being of her fellow teachers. Her keen intelligence was obvious.
Please accept my sincere condolences.

My condolences to the family. Yvonne was one of my favourite teachers and I enjoyed discussion after class when waiting for my father whose class was adjacent to hers. I was fortunate to be gifted one of her hand knit blankets and music when my daughter was born. My heart is sad but I feel blessed to have known her. May her family cherish in the memories they shared.

I was lucky enough to have Mrs. Vaughan for grade 11 history and sociology. I don’t quite remember why, but I think I was intimidated by her at first, thinking she’d be really tough. She ended up being one of my favorite teachers and making history much more interesting than I had ever found it before.
I am sorry to learn of her passing and send my sincere condolences to her family and friends.

I had Mrs. Vaughan for Sociology. I remember we had to do a presentation on something that mattered to us. It could literally be on anything! Now as a teacher myself of 27 years I always recall the impact of being given choice in what I was learning. I remember so much about that presentation and the presentation of those in that class. When teachers care about their students it comes through in all they do.

Mrs Vaughn was a turning point for me in high school. She made me feel heard. She valued my input. She believed in me. She made a lasting impression. In my grade 12 year I received the first ever turn around achievement award and I give her a lot of credit for this. That was 30 years ago. About 10 years ago I was able to reach out and find her again. The same kind and gentle woman welcomed me back. Anyone who had her was blessed.

Mrs. Vaughan taught me Grade 11 History and Grade 12 Sociology. She brought such care and compassion to her work with all of her students, regardless of their ability. I remember feeling so discouraged because I struggled so much with math and sciences, and Mrs. Vaughan told me in feedback on one of my essays that I was a "gem in a sea of students" and that I would go far if I followed my passion. I still have that essay. And I always defer to it even now when things get tough. And so here I am (26 years later!) working at SickKids Hospital as a social worker, following my heart absolutely. And I have Mrs. Vaughan in large part for giving me the courage to do so. My sincerest condolences to her family. I hope you find comfort in the knowledge of just how many of us are out there whose impact she had was profound - a true testament to a beautiful spirit who will be dearly missed.

Ms. Vaughan was my house homeroom teacher in grade 12. One week I decided I needed some time off from school, so I showed up on Tuesday morning with a forged note from my mother stating that I needed the rest of the week off due to the death of an uncle. On Thursday evening my mother asked me if I was OK? I stated yes, I was. Turns out Ms. Vaughan called the house on Thursday to see if she if there was anything she could do for the family. I was busted. I never counted on Ms. Vaughan’s big heart getting in the way and getting me caught. Even when I showed up on Friday morning for class she showed nothing but kindness and compassion. She truly was one-of-a-kind. And will be missed.
My condolences to the entire family but know that she touched a lot of kids in a positive way and left a positive mark.

Mrs. Vaughan taught me sociology many years ago. I remember one class I got quite annoyed with her lesson on sex differences and had a chat with her after class. To my surprise, she welcomed my criticism and had an open discussion with me. I left with a new perspective and an appreciation for friendly debate. Many educators would have been quick to dismiss the musings of a teenage girl, but not Mrs, Vaughan. I will always remember that lesson. My sincerest condolences to her friends and family on this tremendous loss.

Yvonne was a very Dear and special lady, when she retired from FHS she was to lunch with one of the VP’s. When they returned they brought me a lovely note and gift card from Yvonne. On her retirement she chose to give to others deserving around her. I was one of the chosen recipients. She was truly a treasure. Loved beyond measure and thought of often.

Dear Steve, Mary- Ellen, Scott and Family,
How sad to learn of the passing of a dear friend and former colleague. There are now words to describe such a beautiful friend who was the very essence of kindness and compassion. Blessed with a keen intellect, she was an amazing teacher whose wonderful personality shone through as she guided hundreds of students over the years. The tributes from students speaks volumes. For me, our days in the History Workroom bring back such wonderful memories of dynamic conversations (Yvonne loved political discussions), delicious treats, which were ever-present from her early- morning baking, and , oh, the laughter which still rings in my ears. What a legacy she has left-----if we all could aspire to be an Yvonne, it would be a better world. Deepest sympathy to you all-----your memories will bring solace in the days to come. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her. Forever loved, Diane Flynn

I took Ms. Vaughan’s Sociology class in 1989. It was so interesting! I didn’t know she had helped develop the course but it doesn’t surprise me! Mrs. Vaughn was one of those once-in-a-lifetime teachers. She and she alone inspired me to study Sociology and I am so glad that I did. Her no nonsense approach to teenagers further inspired me to work with kids up until this day. A teacher who influences a person for 30+ years is truly a rarity and certainly a blessing. RIP Mrs. Vaughn.

I only knew her as "Mrs. Vaughn", our Sociology teacher (1982-1983). This was my favourite class in all of high school at FHS. I believe she was an early fosterer of my own career choice, and I'm grateful that I had the experience I did in her class: discussion of things going on in the world, the freedom and encouragement to express different viewpoints, etc.
We had a 40th FHS reunion a couple of weeks ago, and some of us who took her class spoke together about Mrs. Vaughan and her great class- how wonderful she was and the influence she had in our lives. Condolences to her family and friends; I bet she was a real gem to have in your life.
