Obituary of Richard Gauvin

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Richard O. Gauvin, on September 12, 2023, at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital. Born in Dalhousie, NB, on April 19, 1928, Richard was the son of the late Camille Gauvin and Hélène Landry.

He graduated from Dalhousie schools in 1946; financed his university education by working summers in Dalhousie and Gatineau Mills paper mills. He earned a B.Sc. from StFX in 1950, a B.Ed. from UNB in 1951, and a M.Ed. from UNB in 1973.

Richard had a full career in education. He taught science at Bathurst High School from 1951 to 1960. He loved teaching. His teaching was recognized by being awarded a Shell Merit Fellow for advance study in science at Cornell University in 1960. He was principal of Mgr. Leblanc High School from 1960 to 1967, where he taught chemistry. From 1967 to 1974, he was Regional Superintendent of Schools for the counties of Restigouche and Gloucester. He was Chairman of the Minister’s Advisory Committee on Teacher Licensing and Certification from 1971 to 1985. When the Regions were abolished in 1974 Richard moved to Fredericton with his family and resumed his responsibilities as Chairman of the Minister’s Advisory Committee on Teacher Licensing and Certification. He later added the duties of the Registrar working with universities province-wide on teaching standards and certification. He retired in 1985, after 35 years of service.

Richard was very active in various interests in and outside of education. In his 16 years in the schools, he had periods of coaching in basketball – boys and girls, hockey, soccer, called square dancing, and organized tournaments in basketball, hockey, badminton and square dancing. He introduced the year book at both schools and remained faculty advisor to the Student Council at both schools. He attended several summer schools, UNB, Cornell and Laval. He was a member of the Provincial Curriculum Committee from 1962 to 1963; the Provincial Science Subcommittee from 1960 to 1966; Secretary of the NB Science Council from 1958 to 1966; the Canadian College of Teachers; the Canadian Association of Teacher Certification; the Provincial Superintendent of Schools Association (president in 1970); the New Brunswick Teachers Association (local president in 1962); the Parish Committee Sacred Heart Cathedral Bathurst; the Board of Directors of Collège de Bathurst; the Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club; the Bathurst Curling Club (president in 1969); Knights of Columbus (Grand Knight in 1967); the Bathurst Rotary Club (president in 1971), and Paymaster North Shore (NB) Regiment. He was the Commanding Officer of Mgr. LeBlanc High School Cadet Corps. and represented Canada at a Master Cadet Training Camp in Trinidad-Tobago in the summer of 1966. He received commendation from Headquarters in Ottawa for developing a test program for Master Cadets.

Richard married Alberte Marie Paulin on May 22, 1950. Together they had five children and enjoyed many activities with the family. From 1958 to 1967, they camped with the family every year travelling from Fundy Park to New York to Algonquin Park. From 1955 to 1967, Richard and Betty built a home in Bathurst, and in 1962, a cottage at Beresford Beach. Later, when Richard took a position in Fredericton, with the help of his son Robert, André and his wife, they built a home at 208 Mactaquac Heights.

In 1974, he and his wife Betty joined the Capitol Winter Club (CWC) both becoming avid curlers. He served on the Board of Directors of the CWC and New Brunswick Curling Association, and was Senior Rep from 1985 to 1988.

Richard loved dancing, golf, curling and bridge; activities that he shared with his wife/best friend. With Betty, they toured Great Britian, Europe, Cuba and China. They also enjoyed cruising and traveled the Caribbean Islands, Panama Canal, Alaska and Yangtze River. Betty and himself spent 24 winters in Lakeland, Florida, from 1990 to 2014, getting away from the snow. They enjoyed the sun, golf, swimming, club activities, bridge and visits from the children and grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his wife Alberte “Betty”; children, Nicole, Jacques (Jean Belga), André (Susan Chalmers), Eric (Karen Liebenau); daughter-in-law Kathy Warren; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren, as well as several extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brothers Emile, Adrien and Geroge; sister Jeannine, and son Robert.

A memorial mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1500 Hanwell Rd. on October 21st at 11:30am, with Fr. Bill Brennan as celebrant. Interment will be held at the Hermitage Cemetery.

C'est avec tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Richard O. Gauvin, le 12 septembre 2023, à l'hôpital Dr-Georges-L.-Dumont. Né à Dalhousie, Nouveau-Brunswick, le 19 avril 1928, Richard était le fils de feu Camille Gauvin et de feu Hélène Landry.

Il est diplômé des écoles de Dalhousie en 1946 ; a financé ses études universitaires en travaillant les étés dans les usines de papier Dalhousie et Gatineau Mills. Richard a eu une carrière bien remplie dans le domaine de l'éducation. Il enseignait les sciences à Bathurst High School à partir de 1951 à 1960. Il adorait enseigner. Son enseignement a été reconnu en recevant le Shell Merit Fellow pour études avancées en sciences à l'Université Cornell en 1960. Il était directeur de l'école secondaire Mgr. Lycée Leblanc de 1960 à 1967, où il enseignait la chimie. De 1967 à 1974, il était surintendant régional des écoles pour les comtés de Restigouche et de Gloucester. Il a tenu la position de président du Comité Consultatif Ministériel sur la délivrance des permis et la certification des enseignants à partir de 1971 à 1985. Lorsque les régions ont été abolies en 1974, Richard est déménagé à Fredericton avec sa famille où il a repris ses responsabilités de président du Comité Consultatif Ministériel sur la délivrance des permis et des brevets des enseignants. Il a ensuite ajouté les fonctions de registraire, travaillant avec les universités à travers la province sur les normes d'enseignement et la certification. Il prend sa retraite en 1985, après 35 ans de service.

Richard était très actif dans divers intérêts liés à l'éducation . Au cours de ses 16 années dans les écoles, il a eu des périodes d'entraîneur de basket-ball – garçons et filles, hockey, football, appelait la danse carrée, et organisait des tournois de basket-ball, de hockey, de badminton et de danse carrée. Il a introduit les annales dans les deux écoles et est resté conseiller pédagogique auprès du conseil étudiant des deux écoles. Il a fréquenté plusieurs écoles d'été, à l'UNB, Cornell et Laval. Il fu membre du Comité provincial des programmes d'études de 1962 à 1963; le Sous-comité scientifique provincial de 1960 à 1966; secrétaire du Conseil des sciences du Nouveau-Brunswick de 1958 à 1966; le Collège canadien des enseignantes et des enseignants; l'Association canadienne de certification des enseignants; l'Association des surintendants provinciaux des écoles (président en 1970); l'Association des enseignants du Nouveau-Brunswick (présidente locale en 1962); le Comité Paroissial Cathédrale Sacré-Cœur de Bathurst; le conseil d'administration du Collège de Bathurst; le club de golf et country club Gowan Brae ; le Bathurst Curling Club (président en 1969); Chevaliers de Colomb (Grand Chevalier en 1967) ; le Bathurst Rotary Club (président en 1971) et le Paymaster North Shore (NB) Regiment. Il était Officier Commandant de Mgr. LeBlanc High School Cadet Corps et a représenté le Canada à un camp d'entraînement des maîtres-cadets à Trinité-Tobago l'été de 1966. Il a reçu des éloges du quartier général à Ottawa pour avoir développé un programme de tests pour les maîtres-cadets.

Richard épousa Alberte Marie Paulin le 22 mai 1950. Ensemble, ils ont eu cinq enfants et ont apprécié de nombreuses activités familiales. De 1958 à 1967, ils campaient chaque année en famille, voyageant au parc Fundy, à New York et au parc Algonquin. De 1955 à 1967, Richard et Betty ont construit une maison à Bathurst et, en 1962, un chalet à Beresford Beach. Plus tard, lorsque Richard a pris un poste à Fredericton, avec l'aide de son fils Robert, André et son épouse, ils ont construit une maison au 208 Mactaquac Heights.

En 1974, Richard et son épouse Betty se sont joints au Capitol Winter Club (CWC), devenant tous deux de fervents joueurs de curling. Il a siégé au conseil d'administration du CWC et de l'Association de curling du Nouveau-Brunswick et a été représentant principal de 1985 à 1988.

Richard aimait la danse, le golf, le curling et le bridge ; activités qu'il partageait avec sa femme/meilleure amie. Avec Betty, ils ont effectué une tournée en Grande-Bretagne, en Europe, à Cuba et en Chine. Ils ont également apprécié les croisières et ont parcouru les îles des Caraïbes, le canal de Panama, l'Alaska et le fleuve Yangtze. Betty et lui ont passé 24 hivers à Lakeland, en Floride, de 1990 à 2014, à l'abri de la neige. Ils ont profité du soleil, du golf, de la natation, des activités du club, du bridge et des visites des enfants et petits-enfants.

Richard laisse dans le deuil son épouse Alberte « Betty » ; enfants, Nicole, Jacques (Jean Belga), André (Susan Chalmers), Eric (Karen Liebenau); sa belle-fille Kathy Warren; 8 petits-enfants ; 4 arrière-petits-enfants, ainsi que plusieurs membres de la famille élargie.

Outre ses parents, ses frères Émile, Adrien et Geroge; soeur Jeannine et fils Robert l'ont précédé dans la tombe.

Une messe commémorative aura lieu à l'Église Holy Family, 1500 chemin Hanwell, samedi le 21 octobre à 11 h30, avec le P. Bill Brennan comme célébrant. L'inhumation aura lieu au cimetière Hermitage.
