I had "Mr. Roy" for Science and French in the '70's, and 50 years later he is still a fond memory in my heart. He was funny and interesting and kind. When I was back at Albert for my first-year teaching practicum, I walked into the teachers' lounge the first day and there he was! "Call me 'Yoland'," he said. "No, thank you," I responded. Sylbie and family, Our son, Ethan, enjoyed meeting both of you when you were visiting Alberta at the same time as us. He thought it was cool to have another set of “grandparents”. My most sincere sympathy goes out to Sylbie and family on the loss of a wonderful man. Not only was Yoland an excellent teacher and coach who was admired by the many young people whose lives he had touched, but even after retirement from a successful career, he carried that expertise on to the 'School Days Museum' where he proved to be a tremendous asset. A life well lived, Yoland!

Although I never had Mr. Roy as a teacher, he was always around since his classroom was immediately next to my home room in junior high. He was always kind and typically had a smile for everyone. I'm so sorry for your loss, Mrs. Roy, Tanya, Geoff, and Michelle.

Dear Sylbie, Michelle, Geoff, and Tanya, I wonder how many people know that Yoland's first language was French until he had to learn English at the sanitarium in Saint John. His gentle, kind personality and his "joie de vivre" about which so many have already written really go deeply into his Acadian roots! He thoroughly enjoyed the "Immersive Experience" we had in cultural summer studies at Tracadie in the 70's. And Yol was certainly a favourite of our French professors and fellow students. It is obvious, then, that he passed that love on to his second language students at Albert Street! We also enjoyed XC skiing with him as well as his annual slideshows of your travels, fishing experiences, and other adventures. His patriotism shone brightly by virtue of the flags he flew to honour various events that found his favour around the globe, e.g. NZ!! We could write a book about this truly great but humble man; but, limited space dictates that we now offer our deepest sympathy, prayers, and love to all of you. Surely, the Heavens are rejoicing at his presence there! Love Always, Ed & Ivy

I didn't know that, Mr. Bujold! You're correct, though, that he passed his love for the language on to us. He would be appalled at my French at this point, but I'm sure it was due to his influence that I studied enriched French in high school and have taken classes again to try to keep it from getting too rusty! Thank you for your comments - it's nice to hear about him from someone who knew him well. ~Andrea LeBlanc

So sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. Roy. He was my homeroom teacher in 1981-82 at Albert Street School. He taught us french and I remember him as a kind, understanding, gentle man. Mr. Roy was one of my teachers at Albert Street. I don't remember ever seeing him without a smile, and his joyful and relaxed demeanor helped create a welcoming classroom for all. May his memory be a blessing.

My fondest memory of Yoland is that he was always willing to have a conversation and always made me feel welcome. We had many golf outings together. I'm glad that I was blessed to have him in my life. He will be missed. RIP, Uncle Yoland

Heartfelt condolences to Mr.Roy’s family. He taught me in the 80’s at Albert Street Jr. High. He also introduced me to photography, which has become a life long passion and hobby. I often think of him when composing images. He was a great teacher with a fabulous sense of humour. RIP.

Roy family, it was a privilege to work with Yoland at Albert Street. He was always loved and respected by his students. Many hours were spent by Yoland working with students in the gym. Although I never skied with Yoland I often heard Fred Brennan saying what a good skier he was. Many great conversations were had in the staff room when he was present. Yoland’s family was his pride and joy. He will be missed . Condolences to the family from the Holt family.

Sylbie, Michelle, Geoffrey and Tanya; my sincere condolences....Yoland was truly a kind soul and I will always remember his joyful demeanor in my many years of knowing him. As I reflect back on our years together, I am reminded of our New Year's celebrations in the Roy's warm, cosy sitting room; our canoeing/camping experiences; his calm, encouragement as I tried to master Crabbe!; and his wise counsel regarding life's up and down's......He will truly be missed. Dearest Aunt Sylbie, Michell, Geoff and Tanya, My deepest condolences for your loss. Uncle Yoland was so much more than family. He was a mentor who taught me a love for the outdoors. He put me in my first canoe, brought me to my first ski hill, showed me the beauty of the perfect sunset photo, inspired me to build and work with my hands and introduced me to Paul Simon. He inspired me throughout my life and above all he was a dear friend and someone I admired. I will miss him so very much. Karen and I are thinking of you all and send our love.

Mr. Roy was my Science teacher in Grade Seven (76-77) and my French teacher in Grade Nine (78-79). His classes were full of humour and learning, and were always enjoyed by my entire class. And his caring for his students was always evident. One day, when he kept me after school for entirely correct reasons, I missed the bus home as a result. Mr. Roy drove me home instead of having me walk. I always remembered that. It is with my deepest sympathies for your loss that join you in your grief. My class from Albert Street School has been lovingly remembering our former teacher from those long ago years. He was a good teacher. And a good man.
