I only learned of Gwen Martin’s passing today in Saltscapes magazine, in which she is quoted for an article about Hillsborough gypsum. I first came across Gwen’s work in the late 1990s when I began research on my book, Head of the Bay, about the Maringouin peninsula of New Brunswick, which was founded on the grindstone industry. Gwen had produced a two-volume reference book called For Love of Stone which, together with Gesner’s Dream, has became a vital and treasured reference for anyone researching New Brunswick’s mining past. I valued highly Gwen’s thoughtful replies to my queries. My sincere condolences to her family and friends on her passing.

I learned of Gween's passign today, 02 July. This news makes my heart heavy .. many years have passed since we first met in the 1980s over our love for NB's geological history. My memories are strong, but sadly not as recent as they should be. My condolences to Gwen's family and friends ....

Gwen was instrumental in setting up a separate Atlantic Provinces Region (separate from Quebec) for Crime Writers of Canada. She was a tireless volunteer with a wealth of knowledge and compassion. I am privileged to have known her a little bit, and to work with her for a short time. She will be missed.

"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal"
Gwen was all of those things geologist, musician, writer and I was so lucky to call her my friend. Our walks and talks helped us thorough many good times and bad. It was my mission to make her smile and she made it easy, she lived life to the fullest. I will miss her wisdom, her love of nature and our mutual love of books, but most of all I miss her terribly, love you girl, deb

Sending my condolences to all Gwen's family. I lived at Yoho Lake from 1995-2005, we shared some good times. I still have a beautiful piece of marble jade that she gifted me that came from Newfoundland when she was there researching for her book. She will be a missed presence around the lake. Sincerely, Kay Morrison

Magnificent the music, Tchaikovsky,
big and booming, balloons blooming,
colored uniforms, gaudy their globules,
our Field-Marshall standing to attention,
surveying the battlefield, her command
post positioned so she can organize
her army’s response. So, here we are, armed
with pins all primed, balloons at the ready.
Here it comes: climax, crescendo, the old
guard preparing that one last charge, Moscow,
behind us, burning, and now … she cries now …
now … pointing to each of one us in turn
and we pin-prick our balloons … now ... now … our
enemies run, Napoleon retreats,
Moscow is saved … glorious music, church
bells ring out in a wondrous finale.

Sending my condolences to Gwen's family and friends. I did not know Gwen, but her book Gesner's Dream was and continues to be very helpful as I promote the NB Coal Mining industry.

I stop for a moment, feel Gwen’s silence in my lungs, and think of how many tears, hugs, and prayers are this very moment leaping into the universe in her name. I, too, add my prayers to the clamor.

Ah, dear Gwen. I was fortunate to have over forty years of her laughter, her insights, her kindness, and her stories. No one could tell a tale quite like herself. She fully lived her own life, and it was just best to join in. One day I came upon her, dressed up to the nines (as she could do), sitting on the street curb intent on watching something in the gutter. With Gwen, you just sat down beside her and joined in. I'm so glad I got to join in with a whole lot of stuff. ~ Dale Estey

What can one say. Your obituary says it all. She knew so much about so many things. Truly the most talented, versatile, genuine, intelligent, kind, etc., etc., person I've had the good luck to know. She leaves us diminished. (This photo is from 2004 when my nieces were visiting and she supplied hats and took us on a hike to Little Yoho. The girls still talk about this.)

Gwen was a fellow writer and a good friend. I first met her in the 1990s when she wrote the public information documents for the New Brunswick Water Classification Program. Later I knew her as executive director for the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick. I will never forget her singing of ‘Danny Boy’ one year at the Maritime Writers’ Workshop. I was glad to know her in recent years as one of those who loved life around Yoho Lake. I will never forget her.

My condolences for your loss of Gwen. I met her through the WFNB. She was so vibrant, so full of life. It's hard to imagine her not been here, here in the world. But she is somewhere else now, organizing, explaining, telling stories and comforting.

I have no words worthy of this giant spirit woman but I will pass along my impressions and memories. I first met Gwen through the Writers' Federation of New Brunswick. Once you have an encounter with Gwen you are instantly hooked. She isn't going to let you go. Off and on over the next 15 years we would pop up to share messages. It always brought a smile to hear from her when she would respnd to something mailed out from our community centre. Last May I fired off an email to her to ask about some things. She was on her way to the last of her treatments. The blow from the shock was instant and left me off balance, as these things do. In the long run it was better to know, just in case. We spoke a few times after that day and when things got quiet I knew it was best to wait. Everything in the words of her obituary are true to me. She made me feel important, worthy, and valid. She made me laugh, think, and feel. What more could one ask of another human or be given by one? There never really is enough "time" but occasionally we are gifted the opportunity to have crossed paths with a superior being. I'm grateful.
