I had the priviledge of working with Diana when she was Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts. She was a great leader, a wonderful teacher and scholar. She counselled many students who were having problems, and they left feeling like someone actually listened and cared. The last time I saw Diana was at a celebration when she was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award and a 3M National Teaching Fellowship. We chatted for some time, she always so kind and thoughtful. She will be dearly missed and my deepest sympathies to the family. Jackie

I will always be grateful to Dr Austin for her kindness to me when I began teaching at UNB ten years ago. She was funny and warm, and put me at ease at once. May her journeys continue...

As a former student at UNB many years ago, I was fortunate to have had Dr Diana Austin as my prof for English 1000 and stayed in touch several years after graduating. Her influence beyond the classroom was immeasurable; she was one of those rare teachers who taught as much inside as outside the classroom. She inspired by the way she lived her life, facing every life challenge with boldness and courage that revealed her incredible inner strength. How she faced her final illness was so characteristic of her grace, tenacity and resilience, her concern for others even as her own life was ebbing, and her ability to find meaning and purpose even in the most difficult and tragic of life circumstances. Her zest and passion for life and teaching, the personal interest she took in her students and those around her, her kind encouragement, care, and thoughtful concern for others will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. To her husband Tim, and to Diana’s family who mourn her passing, my sincere sympathies and condolences on your loss. Diana was truly a great light in the world - we were blessed to have experienced her warmth and brightness for a time. May she rest in peace and may her memory and legacy continue to burn brightly in the hearts of all those who knew, loved, and were inspired by her. ~ Sephora

My condolences to Dr. Austin's family. I was lucky to have her as a professor at UNB, and I still think about her course on WWI literature fondly. She had a lasting impact on many students, and her determination to educate others even in her obituary speaks to the kind of strong character she was.

Dear Tim and family,
My deepest condolences. I did not know Diana very well, but I greatly enjoyed her hospitality on those occasions you graciously invited us to your home. She was kind and thoughtful. I hope, as you, that strides will be made in fighting this disease and that some good will come out of this tragedy.

My deepest condolence to Diana’s family. I knew Diana very well in the many years I was Admin Secretary for the Department of English. She was very special and a good friend and the cancer research she has done doesn’t surprise me.

I had the privilege of getting to know Diana when she contacted me shortly after receiving her diagnosis of ovarian cancer, a diagnosis I myself had received 11 years ago. We wrote back and forth about her joy in life, her efforts to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, and her tireless research into early detection possibilities. Many women in the future will have reason to thank Diana for her efforts.
To her husband Tim Rattenbury, and her family, I offer my deepest condolences.

My condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Austin. I was so lucky to be one of her students at UNB, and she always went above and beyond for us. While I was a student of hers, I ended up needing a surgery and hospital stay, and to my delight and surprise a beautiful flowering plant was delivered to my hospital room, courtesy of Dr. Austin. I will never forget her kindness, always remember her with love, and promise to do my best to share her message.

Diana was a singularly wonderful person, a special colleague and a positive life force for all who knew her. I wish I had known her better, for every moment spent in her presence was uplifting. I will remember Diana as one of the most exceptional people I've ever met and am grateful UNB afforded me that experience.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Diana’s family as I know how dearly they miss her. My sincere condolences go out to all who loved her and whose lives she touched; so many I am sure. I was blessed to have known Diana for a few years and I have always admired her for her grace, selflessness, caring and teaching. She will forever be remembered for her quiet strength, and how she shared her knowledge with others. She was sharing her knowledge, to educate, selflessly, even to the end of her life. What an incredible lady she was. God Bless you Diana, rest in peace now.

I do not know Diana or "Dee" as I see people using, but I do know her brother Alan. As a professor, I'm sure she's inspired many students and now in her obit she has inspired me. When my time comes, I now plan to use my obit to share truly valuable knowledge with others just as she has done. I've shared her obit with my friends in hopes that it helps to save a life someday and they in turn are also sharing it. I'm sure she'll be missed beyond measure, but her wisdom and kindness will live on. My sincere condolences to her family.
