I will always fondly remember Miss Macdougall from my four years at UNB and all the ways she helped me directly and indirectly during my studies. She also motivated me in my career choices and I am forever grateful to her for that. Whenever I happened to see her in Miramichi, she always remembered my name and initiated a cheerful conversation.

My deepest sympathy to the family. Myself (Keith Stewart) and Gerald Shields were the first graduates from the 2 year Accounting Program taught by her at NBIT. She was a great teacher and person, we, her students owe her more than she ever could have known.

I had the pleasure of working with Margaret from 1970 until her retirement from the University of New Brunswick. Margaret was a woman ahead of her time. At the Technical School she was the only woman in a male environment. She had to fight for everything she believed in and then some; there definitely was a glass ceiling. She always held true to her beliefs and that the primary focus should always be the students and their well being.

I visited Marg from time to time. Marg always made a pot of tea and put it on a folding table set between us. We would sit in the sun room, chat about family, travel, and what was happening in town. Marge always insisted I sit in the rocking chair as it was the "best" chair. And Marg was adamant visitors were to be given the" best" . One lovely sunny day, I saw my first red Cardinal while visiting with Marge in her sunroom. Now, Marg will be first in my thoughts when I see a red Cardinal.

Thinking of you all as the extended relatives and friends of Professor MacDougall……I had the privilege and pleasure of having her as a teacher and friend. My success of having a rewarding teaching career at the high school and college level is due to her influence. She was a caring and compassionate educator who only wanted the best for her students. She touched hundreds of lives and made a difference within the educational system in the Province of New Brunswick. “Well done, thy good and faithful servant! May God’s Holy Spirit give you Comfort and Peace, knowing she made a difference.

Marg has been a family friend for many years. She was always up for a lively conversation, and discuss the book of the day. She tutored my brother for many years, and I think they both enjoyed their time together. She will be truly missed.

I was a student in the Business Education Teacher Training Program at NBIT from September 1970 until June 1972. Miss Macdougal taught us Teaching Methods in our first year and Teaching Methods as well as Tests and Measurements in our second year. She was very devoted to seeing that we were well prepared for the classroom.
I remember walking home laden with a large stack of books when I was stopped by a motorist. It was Miss Macdougal; she thought that I had withdrawn from the program and was taking my books home. Fortunately, I had not withdrawn. She was kind enough to drive me the rest of the way to my boarding house.
I have never forgotten her dedication in seeing that her students would enter the classroom as effective, efficient teachers. She took great pride in that accomplishment.

Margaret and I and my wife Marion Giberson Roussie met Margaret when we were taking the teacher education program at NBIT in Moncton long ago. That experience combined with having been colleagues later at NBIT and the University of New Brunswick, we had established a collegial and social friendship for many years.
There are two anecdotes I’d like to share. The first one relates to my time as her student at NBIT. I remember being called to her office after having written my first major exam in her course. I thought to myself “Oh no. I must have failed her exam?” But that wasn’t the case. Her advice to me was, “ You did extremely well on your exam but I think you should get more experience before you try writing a teacher training book.”
The second story relates to the time Margaret, Jim Clair and I drove to NYC to attend a National Business Education Association conference. Margaret drove us in her car; and when we reached the parking garage at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel (pretty fancy digs, huh), she shut off the engine and turned to face Jim and I and said, “ now guys you are here for a good time. Enjoy yourselves. What happens in New York stays in New York.” Well if that didn’t break us up into fits of laughter, nothing would. That was a side of Margaret very few would have known.
We’ll miss you, Margaret. Gerry

I have watched Margaret for several years, even when not in Canada. She was a valuable member of our church. I always enjoyed visiting for a "cup a tea" and hearing her stories about life. We shared memories of people and places on the Miramichi.

Before I ever met Margaret, I heard how strict and firm she was. However, when I was determined to pursue a teaching career seven years after high school graduation, I discovered that she was very supportive and seemed impressed with the persistence I displayed in my pursuit. The class schedule for the one-year program was designed so I could take accounting methods with the two-year program. Then, while writing my final exams in 1971, I got word that my niece had been killed in a car accident. I walked in and told her I was going home, and she was very supportive in helping me reschedule my exams. I had not seen her in recent years, but heard many positive things about her continued involvement. No question, she was a special lady!

I am so proud to have known this wonderful lady . . . she was my silent partner in negotiating the right paths for me, a quiet councillor and the reason that I was able to pull my life together after my family’s tragic car accident in my first year of teaching.
I feel like I never thanked her enough for negotiating rides for me to get to Saint John from Moncton to see my Mom when she had two eye surgeries during my two-year Teacher Training Program.
And then, when Mom, Dad, brother, and niece were killed in a head-on, on the way home from visiting me, in March, 1967, she called me near the end of the school year. I had just turned 20 years old. She presented me with her plan to get me out of the grief stricken environment, and, that’s when I said “yes” to a move to Oromocto High School . . . and the healing began.
You have earned your angel wings in so many caring ways.

I never met Margie. In fact, up until a few months ago ‘Margie’ was just a name written on the back of a few black and white photos from the summer of 1942. But my father, Jimmie, knew Margie, in that summer of ‘42, when he arrived in Chatham to train as a RAF navigator. He and Margie spent all their free time together, swimming, dancing, and going to shows. The relationship must have been special as both seemed to have treasured it over many years, in their different ways. Margie must have been quite a lady – after all, she managed to get my father out on the dance floor.

Margaret and I communicated for the past number of years up until a few months ago. I will miss her letters but am grateful for the rapport we shared in that correspondence and so impressed that she overlooked--and must have forgiven--the rather rude and rebellious student I was back in 64-66. She was always very proud of the fact that she was the same age as Queen Elizabeth. One of her greatest joys were the little birds she could see from her windows and we so enjoyed writing about our country roots, the trees and flowers of our childhoods.

Margaret Macdougalll (with a small "d" if I remember her correcting us) was an institution at NBIT (later NBCC Moncton). She was head of the Teacher Training for Business Education and taught us Teaching Methods - thoroughly! In the days of short skirts and long hair, she threatened to meet us at the door with scissors and a ruffle. In any conversations about our days at NBIT, Miss Macdougall is always fondly and humourously remembered, Her name came up just two days ago when I speaking with another former student. She was feared, respected, and loved. I've seen her over the years at the Boyce Farmers' Market and she always remembered my name. Truly a special person.

Remembering Margaret from my connections with her through Woolastook Presbytery meetings. She was always committed and informed at the meetings and took her responsibility as a rep for her congregation seriously. Having shared a common heritage through Black River Bridge, the birthplace of my mom, Margie always seemed to be eager to strike up a conversation with me.Her life of faith and dedication to her local church at Forest Hill will be remembered fondly by many. Well done, good and faithful servant.
