Dr. MacDonald was our family Dr. until he retired and we thought the world of him. You never felt rushed in his office and he was extremely thorough. I had a serious illness and he sent me to Montreal to be treated. Our daughter is a family Dr. now largely because of him. She spent a day with him when she was in grade 9 and it set her on her path. Sincere condolences. We have lost one of the very best.

Our heartfelt condolences to Dr MacDonald's family. We lost an amazing physician, mentor, colleague, and friend. Dr MacDonald was my Family Medicine Residency Preceptor, and he inspired me to continue with my Care of the Elderly Fellowship. His relationship with his patients, his excellent communication skills, and a very compassionate care have been a model of practice for many of us, trainees. On a personal level, Ian and Jane have been dear friends who welcomed us in their home and introduced us to many outdoor experiences. We will greatly miss him and we are very fortunate to have met him and his family.

Our sincere condolences to the family. Dr. MacDonald was our doctor from 1977 until he retired. He was the very best doctor and certainly one of a kind. When our last son was born, he was very jaundiced but after 10 days Dr. MacDonald allowed us to go home. He phoned us each day of the weekend to check on us and report the latest bloodwork results. That kind of support meant a lot to us. I also vividly remember Dr. MacDonald walking down the hall of 3NE holding a patient by the hand and chatting while he led her back to her room. Dr MacDonald remained interested in healthcare and seniors after he retired and was part of a team that produced several reports for government. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

My thoughts and heart are with you all at this time. I am so sad to hear of your Father’s passing. He was a wonderful man and GP to me, my husband, our three children (he delivered two of them), and my parents who retired to Fredericton and became friends with your parents. He and my Father shared a love of sailing. He was kind, compassionate and a great listener. In his retirement, he continued to be there for me, supporting me through a difficult time in my Father’s final months. For that, I will be eternally grateful. His memory will live on with so many.

Working side by side at DECH since 1978, Ian was always a pleasure to be with. He was not one to avoid speaking his opinion on issues but never had a bad word about another person. He was a very competent, caring MD who always offered his help in any situation, whether in leadership roles, clinical care or teaching. His patients were always very appreciative of his care for them and were not afraid to say it. Ian's perseverance and strong will through his own multiple illness" for the last 31 years was an inspiration to all of us. Despite these struggles , Ian always had his respected voice heard in MD meetings and his colleagues remember, the joke among us in our respect for Ian, he never learned to whisper! :))LOL.
Ian will always be remembered as a model family man with Jane always by his side, loving father, great advocate for vulnerable patients and a model caregiver for the rest of his RN and MD colleagues to emulate.

Sending deepest sympathy to the family, the many coworkers, friends and acquaintances that Ian touched on his journey through life. He was known by many of his colleagues in the medical field as the miracle doctor. I was his patient and I also worked in the diagnostic imaging field ( xray). I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in the 1970’’s. The advice he gave me determined how I dealt with my afflication . He said “ Audrey you may have arthritis, but don’t let arthritis have you.” I am so grateful to have known him as a caregiver, coworker, and a friend. I remember as a young nurse how impressed I was at how much Dr. MacDonald cared for his patients and those around him who worked with him. I was away in Toronto for a period of time and then returned to Fredericton. I remember he met me on the street one day, recognized me and called me by name. He asked me about my children who had been in the music festival, called them by name and told me how much he enjoyed them. I didn't even know until then that music was important to him, and I certainly expect him to remember me. That was a memory I have never forgotten. I heard so many comments from nursing colleagues and patients of his about how much they loved him and respected him. My few encounters with him were very special. I am very sorry for your loss and know that my prayers are with you. He was a special man!

Sincere condolences to Andy and Jennifer, but also to his siblings Sharon, Carol, and Edward and other members of Ian’s extended family. Ian had high standards of morals and ethics and was totally dedicated to his role as a physician in the medical arena in Fredericton and beyond. At the same time, he found time to enjoy family adventures, particularly in outdoor activities. He was compassionate, friendly, very musical, had a great sense of humour, and was intensely proud of his children.
We came to know Ian, not through medical association, but as members of the organizing committee for the New Brunswick Highland Games, of which he served as Chairperson for several years. Through that, we developed a close personal relationship with Ian, his late wife Jane, and Jennifer, gradually expanding to include several other family members. When we relocated to Halifax, Ian asked Carolyn if she would consider being a part time “caregiver” for his mother, driving her to appointments - hair, medical, banking, etc., as well as simple companionship.
Quite a few years ago when I was diagnosed with respiratory issues, I confided with Ian for ad hoc medical advice, and he followed my disease progression accordingly. This past fall, I called Ian from Toronto following my double lung transplant and subsequent recovery - he was over the moon to hear how well things had gone. Ever one to have a keen interest in the welfare of others, he tended to downplay his own medical issues.
Ian will be sadly missed by his wide network of medical colleagues, friends, pipe band members, and various advocacy groups. New Brunswick is poorer with his passing but much richer for having had the benefits of his many years of community service.
Rest easy, old friend.

As a teenager, I was lucky to be one of Ian's first patients when he opened his practice in Fredericton, and he remained my family doctor for close to 40 years until his retirement. He delivered my three children, and came to my hospital room at 1 am when he had noticed my name on the patient list, to hold my hand and shed tears with me after a difficult miscarriage. He took our family through many medical challenges. When I returned to university as a mature student in the UNB nursing program, he supported me and was proud of my accomplishments. I then had the pleasure of working with him in the hospital setting. When he became ill, my then 8 year old daughter needed medical attention, and when she found out that Dr MacDonald was sick in the Toronto hospital, she insisted on sending him a card. In it, she lamented she saw a different doctor, "but he was not as good as you." Ian got a great chuckle out of that! He was so dedicated to the entire heath community, and to his patients, but his family was always forefront, and he would speak of them with great pride. My husband Philip joins me in sending our deepest condolences to his son Ian, daughter Jennifer, and the entire family. He has been irreplaceable as a family physician. I know he leaves a huge hole in your hearts, and will be dearly missed by so many.

We learned during morning report today that Dr. MacDonald had passed away. I could feel the sadness in the room as so many of us had known him in various capacities, most recently as our Extramural patient for the last few years. I first heard of Dr. MacDonald from another EMP patient who had been part of his cancer support group. She showed me the framed painting on her wall that he and Jane had given her when she moved into a new apartment and had nothing. From the way she spoke of him and how much he meant to her, I knew he must be an extraordinary person. A few years later I got to meet him as a patient, and I understood right away what she meant. Though I only saw him a few times, his way of being really struck me as remarkable. What a life and a legacy. My condolences to all who knew and loved him.

Dr. MacDonald was my physician and my unofficial therapist for 30+ years. If you ever had an appointment at his office, you knew you could be waiting an hour or two to see him. But once you passed those doors as his patient - you had his full attention. He helped me through so, so many moments as an angsty teen.
He had both my parents and I as patients. He remembered my family dynamic without me ever having to re-explain it. He kept newspaper clippings of his patients special moments in their medical record. When I went on to become a nurse, Dr MacDonald would tell me how proud he was of me - as my Dad said to me today “he was your biggest fan.”
The day of my appointment to confirm my pregnancy with first child, Dr MacDonald sadly announced to me his pending retirement. And even though I had started with my new physician for the rest of my pregnancy, Dr. MacDonald was one of my first few visitors in hospital. He had made note that I was due in early June and had kept tabs on the inpatient list to pay me a visit and meet my baby.
He was that special of a man & care provider.
Thank you for such exceptional care Dr. MacDonald… I suppose I should say that I was one of your biggest fans too❤️

I completed my residency in family medicine in Fredericton, NB. Dr MacDonald was a beloved member of of the medical community and teaching faculty.
I will forever remember Dr MacDonald playing the role of a simulated patient. He embraced his role as a simulated patient with the enthusiasm he approached most everything. His first line was, "Doc, I'm growing boobs!"
It's been almost 15 years since that encounter.
As we transitioned from our initial roles as student and teacher to colleagues, I would often remind Ian of one of our first encounters! He and I would both laugh.
His positivity and dedication to our professional is unparalleled. (I have memories of him doing rounds while pulling his own IV pole down the hall!)
(For those inquiring minds, the simulated patient had liver failure. He was unable to metabolize hormones effectively, and an accumulation of estrogen lead to gynecomastia.)

Dr MacDonald was always a pleasure to work with. He was very much present in my early years as a nurse. After he left the hospital setting, I ran into him at a local Tim Hortons. Not sure if he would know who I was, I began to say hello with the intent of introducing myself. When he replied "Sarah! How are you? Do you still work on 4 North West", I was pleasantly surprised. Of all the nurses and other staff he worked along side, he not only knew my name but also where I worked. That interaction has always been very special to me and will remain near and dear to my heart. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.
