Ron was beyond comparison in what he did for me and for so many others. His generosity, sometimes naive but always unconditional, was an inspiration to us. And his enthusiasm for and knowledge about great violinists and violists of the past, for fine instruments and bows, and for playing music, especially string quartets (especially Mendelssohn) enriched generations of people. I will treasure the books, photos, and especially the brand new violin case that he gave me. And I will be listening to Mendelssohn quartets (I played all of them with Ron) throughout the day.

This is sad news for all of us. Ron had an immense enthusiasm for playing and for things violinistic - he was a practical and useful walking encyclopaedia of things 'string'. I loved teaching him - and Ian and Megan - and being friends with Elizabeth and the whole family. My thoughts are with you.

Hi Mr MacDonald, I would like to thank you for everything you've done for me, my family, and many, many others. You were one of the first people we met when we moved to Canada, and you were there to teach, support and inspire me to play music. It's a gift I will forever take to heart and I will always think of you whenever I play. We were together so many times and we shared many laughs and spectacular moments together, like those times at the restaurants, the music festivals and the provincials. All those memories I will never forget and I will keep them for the rest of time. You told us the stories of your wondrous life and you always found a way to make everyone in a room smile. You were a talented, warm-hearted and loving person and your legacy will live on through those who once knew and loved you. You inspired us all, and we will always remember you. Thank you for everything. We miss you and we love you.

From R'jean and I, please accept our deepest sympathies. Over the years, we have much appreciated your family as neighbour and particularly Ron in those last few years. The children were able to share some good time near the brook and in the neighbourhood. From Ron's balcony, we have heard summer private concert. France was privileged to take violin lessons from him. We will keep very good memories of our neighbour Ron.

My sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to your entire family. Losing a loved one is never easy, especially during these difficult times. I hope you are all managing OK and leaning on each other for strength and support. I never had the pleasure of knowing Ron, but have been lucky enough to meet Iain. Based on the person that Iain is, it's clear to me that Ron was a good man who raised his family with the love and values necessary for them to become decent, intelligent, hard-working, kind human beings. The apple couldn't have fallen too far from the tree. Celebrate his life and cherish the memories and good times you shared. I'm sure there were many. Pass on the lessons and wisdom learned from Ron's life to the next generation and his legacy will endure forever. Sending lots of love and well-wishes to the East Coast from my family to yours. With sympathy, Daniel Buzzelli

My wife Carol and I wish to express our sympathy at the passing of my friend Ron. I grew up next door to Ron in Sunny Brae, now a part of Moncton, during the 1950s. We shared many days together along with his dog Duke and later his dog Mike. We would put on concerts in the basement of my home. One of the key elements of the program was when Ron came on stage to play his violin to a audience of 10 or 15 kids! Once we finished high school, I lost contact with Ron. However later we became colleagues at UNB: Ron in the Department of Philosophy and I in the Department of Civil Engineering. Ron always kept an interest in the violin and he mentored many young people as they learned to play the violin. Our daughter, Marnie Schwarz, learned to play the violin and was able to join the Fredericton Symphony Orchestra over the last few years. While there Ron helped her learn some of the more challenging techniques associated with playing the violin. So the violin was present in our relationship from childhood to the end of Ron's life on this earth. We give sincere thanks for a life well lived. Dale and Carol Bray

He was my viola teacher and good friend. It was not at all nice to be Ron in his last months but he always welcomed visitors, and played his piano even when he was not strong enough to hold up a stringed instrument. He was very much engaged in getting the ornaments right in the Bach C Major Invention. In other words, even near the end, he was interested in music.

I've known Ron since 1976. We played in the Fredericton Symphony together for over forty years and played chamber music together for nearly as long. He was a fine musician and steadfast friend. Ron was great with his music and philosophy students. He was especially good with young kids. Our granddaughter adored him. Ron loved telling stories and was really good at it. I think I'll always clearly remember the sound of his voice as he talked and talked...
