Franz Eppert

Obituary of Franz Eppert

With heaviness of heart, we announce the passing of Franz Eppert of Charters Settlement on Friday, May 28th, 2021, due to cancer. He was 86. Franz was born in Linnich, Germany on October 20th, 1934 to Franz Peter and Sophia Eppert. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Claudia Eppert, Franz Markus Eppert, Kolja (and Constantina) Eppert, grandchildren Nikolas Eppert and Christopher Markus Eppert, and by his brother Walter Eppert, and sisters Fränzel Eppert and Erika Tielker. After receiving his doctorate, Franz moved his family from Germany first to North Dakota in 1968, and then to Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1969. He was a professor of German language and culture at the University of New Brunswick and a passionate educator until his retirement in 2000. Long stays in several countries (Myanmar, USA, Iran and Singapore) inspired his particular research interest in intercultural aspects of German as a foreign language. He authored several books, one of the family’s favorites being Deutsch Mit Vater und Sohn (German with Father and Son). An enthusiastic traveler, and avid reader of literature, philosophy, history, and culture, Franz also enjoyed fine wine, jokes and beautiful vistas. He dearly loved his quiet home in the woods, and an early morning well-spent included classical music and coffee, while reading newspapers. While early retirement years were spent in continued scholarly pursuits, landscaping, and explorations of New Brunswick, later retirement also included forwarding funny or breathtaking youtube videos to friends and family. We will remember him always as curious, engaged, independent, and adventurous. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Karen Ackerson for her wonderful care of and close friendship with Franz in the last five years of his life. Due to COVID-19, there will be no formal visitation or funeral. Online condolences may be made and memories shared at www.mcadamsfh.com and these will be very appreciated by the family. For those who wish, donations in his memory may be made to the Schizophrenia Society of Canada https://schizophrenia.ca/donate/.
