Obituary of Alan S. Lawrence

It is with deep sadness that the family of Alan Sanborn Lawrence announces his passing on May 31, 2021, at the Shannex Parkland Quispamsis. Alan was born on March 15, 1927, in Sherbrooke, Quebec. He was the second of four children of the late Henry Sanborn and Louie Phoebe (Smith) Lawrence. Alan grew up in Granby, Quebec, where he learned at a very early age as a Boy Scout, to "Be Prepared" and "Do Your Best" and this is how he lived his life. After graduating high school in 1945, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces and was in basic training when WW2 ended. Upon his return to Quebec, he attended McGill University where he received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1951 as well as he earned his private pilot license. Alan worked on construction projects that took him to various locations throughout the Eastern Townships of Quebec as well as New Brunswick where he met his wife, the late Leah "Bobbie" Francis Grant, of Canterbury, NB. They were married in 1957. One can imagine the talk in the town when Alan flew into Canterbury and landed on a frozen lake to visit with his wife to be at the nearby family home. Alan and Leah lived in the Eastern Townships, where their two children were born, before eventually settling in Fredericton in 1966 where he joined NB Power and retired after 26 years of service. Alan had many interests, among them skiing, golf, curling, windsurfing, riding his bike and woodworking. He is survived by his son, Rick (Colleen) of Rothesay, NB, and daughter, Joan (Chris Gilmore) of Saint John, NB, as well as his grandson, Patrick. Besides his parents, Alan was predeceased by his brothers, Brooks and Peter, as well as his sister, Harriet. A memorial service will be held from Grace Memorial Baptist Church on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at 1:00 pm with Rev. Dr. Peter Lohnes officiating. Due to limited seating please contact McAdam's Funeral Home at (506) 458-9170 to reserve a space at the service. The service can be watched at https://vimeo.com/567261212
