Obituary of Carmel Theresa Smyth

It is with great sadness that the family of Carmel Smyth, announces her passing on June 18th, 2021, at Fredericton Hospice House, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Port Morien, Cape Breton, NS, on August 30th, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Francis Bray and Agnes (Kanary) Bray. Carmel graduated from Nursing at St. Martha’s School of Nursing and worked as a nurse in Montreal, Fredericton, and in Halifax. She was a shrewd businesswoman and managed the family and company finances for Carl at CRS Architects Inc. Carmel enjoyed quilting and made over 30 quilts; including one for each of her children and grandchildren. She loved music and sang in St. Dunstan’s choir, and even whistled while she worked. Carmel is survived by her husband, Carl Smyth; her children, Kevin Smyth (Heidi) of Kemptville, ON, Brian Smyth (Mary) of PEI, Carol Green (Ralston) of Fredericton, Shawn Smyth (Celestine) of Whitby, ON, Paul Smyth (Tracey) of Fredericton, Darlene Smyth (Warren Liu), of Singapore; 19 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; as well as brothers Pat Bray (Mary) of Halifax, NS, and Frank Bray (Sheila) of Sydney, NS. In addition to her parents, Carmel was predeceased by her daughter Maureen; brothers Gerald, Arthur, Thomas, George and Bill Bray; and her sister Mary McGinnis. A public visitation will take place at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street, on Friday, July 9th, from 7-9 PM. A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Carmel Smyth will be held at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church, Fredericton, on Saturday, July 10th at 11:00 AM. Due to the current social distancing restrictions please contact McAdam’s Funeral Home at (506)458-9170 to register if you wish to attend the Mass. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice House, Fredericton.
