Obituary of Sebastian Alexander Edwards
It is with great sadness that the family of Sebastian Alexander Edwards announces his death at home on Friday, June 18, 2021 at the age of 26. Sebastian was born in Fredericton, NB, on July 31, 1994.
Sebastian is survived by his parents, Kathy (Eakins) Edwards and Alan and Lauren Edwards; step siblings, Tiffany and Kyle; grandparents, Dr. Merrill and Jane Edwards and Alexander McIntosh; uncle, Eric Edwards; aunts, Nancy Hope and Linda McIntosh; nieces and nephews, Oliver, Alexis, Sophia, and Kaleb; his beloved and adored, Zinc and Circe. Sebastian was predeceased by "Super Grampie" Dr. Leonard Edwards, grandparents, Marion Edwards, Dr. Peter and Jean Eakins, and Carmel McIntosh; uncle, Thomas Arthur Eakins; and by beloved dog, Argos, and Nyx the cat.
Sebastian cast off the cloak of darkness and traded in his troubled soul for an immortal one free from the pain and anguish of the human condition. He was sweet and gentle, charming and polite. He was a solitary soul who loved his family, especially his parents and that delightful overabundance of crazy grandparents with whom he was blessed. Granny (Jean) and Argos were waiting to greet him with Gram (Marion) organizing all the arrangements and making hot cross buns.
Sebastian loved visits with his extended family and looked forward to his visits with Uncle Eric. He acquired patience with kiddos from Oliver and Alexis and enjoyed the gifts of being Uncle as they grew older and became more interactive.
Sebastian was gold in the kitchen. That boy could cook and bake anything he set his mind to. And leave truly epic disastrous mess behind. The last few months of his life, Kathy & Seb played "Dirty Dish Chicken", each daring the other to be the first to get sufficient energy to clean up the sink and counters. Every morning, Kathy found a peanut butter coated knife on the counter. Knowledge of the dishwasher’s abilities did not extend to that peanut butter knife operated in darkness apparently. Indeed, we shall equally draw a veil over the festering pit that was his bedroom…all new life forms emerging shall be treated according to the Prime Directive.
He was a voracious reader, a deep thinker, a troubled philosopher. He was truly too beautiful for this temporal world – it gave him great pain to see colonial man’s inhumanity to man. He was a heartfelt defender of women, LGBTQ++ and the downtrodden and oppressed. He was a compass to all who would listen – he carried the burden heavily on his shoulders. He was a pure bright star who shone brightly outwardly but carried his darkness deep and well hidden.
His taste in music was eclectic. The battle for control of car audio was real. He tried manfully to watch movies with his mother, but her video tastes were weird, even more weird than that 80’s crap she listened to in the car, with the windows down, singing loudly. He preferred the safety of movie night Chez Alan and discussing their shared tastes in movies and books.
Sebastian was also Alan’s first mate sailing, and constant companion making beer, hiking, cycling, occasionally churning ice cream on the back deck, and spending many hours on games of strategy that Alan rarely seemed to win. They shared a gentle soul and camaraderie, a quiet kindness, a bond as beautiful and strong as could be. Together, they explored the world around them.
He also shared that odd Edwards mix of untalkative close companionship and laughing to the point of crying. Anyone meeting Sebastian for the first time discovered a young man who was quiet, thoughtful, highly intelligent, and who chose his words and perspective concisely, wisely, and with a dry sense of humour.
He worked hard and without complaint. His favourite times were setting up for big gigs – Harvest Jazz & Blues, U2, gigs with Dad, gigs with Cameron, installs with Greg. He drank good beers and ciders, enjoyed good weed, and gave good hugs when he was feeling well. He loved his Zincky – they bonded over shared awkwardness and apples. They had a special time each night before bed and when Zinc was ready to go to his bed, Sebastian would let him in to the bedroom and we traded "Good night; I love you". Those words, dear friends, were his last spoken.
While we were climbing mountains, he was carrying them. He set down his burden and his spirit shot into the stratosphere. He finally felt pure lightness and love as the angels lifted him.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held from Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, June 26 at 2:00 PM. Please note that all seats are reserved for this service.
