Obituary of Elizabeth Saunders
A longtime resident of Fredericton, born in McGivney and passed away in the early hours of June 8 at the Veteran’s Health Unit after battling many health issues.
Mom had a zest for life that lead to many interests: she was a member of the R.C.A.F. from 1957 – 1962 and shortly after married Dad and raised five children.
One of Mom’s biggest passions was genealogy, it was rare for her to meet someone and not know their family history.
In the mid 80’s she had a weekly article in the Miramichi Headwaters called Past Reflections.
In 1985 Mom was one of the founding members of the Boiestown Genealogical and Historical Branch.
Mom played a role in founding the 2998 Upper Miramichi Regional Cadet Corps. in 1983. She began as admin clerk and ended as Capt. She was very proud of her "Cadet Kids" (In recent months, she loved when her brother Winston called her Capt.)
Mom played a big role in The Duke of Edinburgh Awards, loved writing songs and stories and in 2002 was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. Until retirement, Mom worked in the Archives at the university.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband Clarence, whom was the reason Mom was able to live at home until January; children Beth (Gary Skutar) of Penhold, AB, Clarence of Kevisville, AB, Kelly (Christine) of Calgary, AB; grandchildren Tristan Calhoun (Christina), Randall Calhoun, Jessie (Rodney Bryant), Emilia Thomson (Julie Berry), Ryan Thomson, Sequoia Jackson-Saunders and her mother Tina; 6 great grandchildren; sons-in-law Darren McIntosh, Danny Calhoun; siblings Olivia Conroy, Winston Fairley (Linda) and John Fairley; sisters and brothers-in-law Rose Fairley, David Saunders (Mary), Larry Saunders (Bev), Terry Saunders, Patsy Saunders-Goguen, Pamela (Philippo Scichilone), Dot Sullivan and Danny Saunders (Patsy), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Predeceased by her precious daughters Terri McIntosh (2020) and Julie Thomson (2017); son-in-law John Thomson; parents Patricia (1987) and William (1988); brother Pat; infant siblings William and Lucy; nephew Owen Fairley; brothers-in-law Reg Conroy, and Norman Saunders, as well as mother and father-in-law Dorothy and Clarence.
A big thank you to Mom’s home care workers, Father Bill Brennan, Dr. Pond, the Veteran’s Health Unit and God Bless you Linda McNichol for all the care and assistance you’ve given Mom and Dad.
Our Angel will be forever loved and always missed.
A Funeral Mass will be held at a later date. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
