Mavis Shanks

Obituary of Mavis Caroline Shanks

With a broken heart, I (Jeff) must announce the passing of Mavis. Born in Little Lepreau, she lived a very full and long life. Mavis worked many years in the retail industry, including Macy's (Saint John) and Sears (Saint John), the second where she was one of the very last licensed corsetieres in New Brunswick. It was at Sears where she met her husband Murray, he liked her car (an early 60's Austin A30). Married for 51 years, they started life together in Grand Bay (she also "retired" from the workforce just prior to the wedding). They moved to Fredericton in 1968 where she resided until her passing. Mom was a long-standing member of the Pythian Sisters (Loyalist Temple #13) and a member of the Eastern Star (Celestial #3). She was also a member of T.O.P.S. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) where she was a Regional Director for nearly 18 years, allowing her to travel and see a lot of places. All three of those organizations allowed her to gain very good and long-term friends. Predeceased by her Parents (Walter & "Gussie" McPherson). Her husband Murray (2016). Her two sisters, Agnes (Chester Mawhinney) and Thema (Ervin Corscadden). Her brothers James (baby), Allan (Edna), Charles (Merle), Chester (Zelda - living). Mavis was the baby of the family and the last surviving member of her immediate family, though McPherson’s still occupy a lot of Charlotte County. She is survived by Jeff (Jeffrey Shanks), many nieces and nephews as well as all their descendants. Her great loves were her substantial Hummel and Royal Doulton collection(s), her knitting, and on any evening… you would find a baseball game, hockey, or wrestling on the television!! Many days were spent in Cambridge-Narrows playing lawn darts, and more than a few evening hours were spent playing 45’s & 63’s. Celebrate the good times, and the fond memories of Mavis. Per her wishes, there will not be any visitation. There will be a private graveside service later this summer.
