Obituary of Erna Marie Leger

Erna Marie Leger, seventy-seven, passed on October 20th, 2021, at the Saint John Regional Hospital following an automobile accident. She is survived by her husband Robert (Bob) Leger. On May 4, 1944, Erna was born in Riley Brook, New Brunswick, a remote logging town and sports destination. Uninterested in logging, hunting, or fishing, Erna left Riley Brook at age sixteen and obtained education in office administration. Soon after that, she succeeded everywhere she worked and was loyal to a fault (evidenced by a forty year career with the New Brunswick Teachers’ Association and retirement at age seventy-one). In addition to giving everything to her work and family, Erna had what can only be described as a "calling to care". Instinctively, she equally supported the success or challenges of everyone she knew. Erna had an unstoppable energy and an endless supply of "post it notes" to remind her: to show-up for your child’s hockey game, to bring you supper, or to call and boost your spirits. The only thing she asked in return was to listen to her boast about her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Erna will be mourned by Bob and her two sons, Brad (Tammy), Dan (Veronic). "Nanny" will also be profoundly missed by many, including her grandchildren, Hannah (Alec), Dax, Sammie, Mack, Alek, and Audrik; her great-grandchildren, Walker, Easton, Violet, and Hazel; and her siblings Marjorie Craig, Nancy Shaw (Mike), and Paul Porter (Pat Post) who called her "Nan". Erna is predeceased by her parents Peter and Edith Porter (McAaskill), and her brother Bob. In the hours before her death, Erna was cared for by dozens of first responders and healthcare workers. Erna and all the family are forever grateful for the courage, compassion, and skill that you each bring to your professions and you all would have been added to her "homemade Christmas gum drop cake list" (a true honor). Erna and the family are equally grateful for the friendship and care provided by Dr. Cheryl Rushton. Arrangements have been entrusted to McAdam’s Funeral Home and a celebration of Erna’s life will take place in the future when Bob fully recovers from injuries sustained in the accident. This will be updated on this website. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Fredericton.
